Black History Month 2026 🖤✨

This month, we join the celebration of Black History Month 2026 and this year's theme, "Honouring Our Communities" 🤝🏾🏡

Today, we're shining a light on just a few of the Black Nottingham figures whose work, leadership and commitment have helped shape our city and inspire others:

• Eric Irons - Nottingham's first Black magistrate, who worked tirelessly to promote equality, inclusion and community cohesion.
• Merlita Bryan - Founder of the Black Achievers Awards and former Lord Mayor of Nottingham, championing the achievements of Black communities across the region.
• Des Wilson - Nottingham's first Black Lord Mayor, an influential community leader, and a dedicated advocate for equity, housing, and youth development.
• George John Scipio Africanus - Nottingham’s first known Black entrepreneur, he founded a domestic registry office on Chandlers Lane.
• Tony Robinson - Nottingham’s first Black Sheriff. He arrived in the city in 1960 and worked in public transport for 25 years.
• Darren George Henry - Made history in 2019 as the first Black MP to represent a Nottinghamshire constituency.

Black History Month 2026 reminds us that history is not only made by famous names. It is also shaped by the volunteers, carers, teachers, parents and community champions whose contributions help our communities thrive.🙌🏾

Who in Nottingham would you like to recognise this Black History Month? Let us know in the comments and and let's celebrate their contribution together.✨

🎃👻 Trick or Treat Safely This Halloween 👻🎃

After Trick or Treating this Halloween, remember that some sweets can be a choking hazard, especially for younger children.

✅ Always supervise young children while they're eating
✅ Encourage children to sit down while eating, rather than walking, running or playing
⚠️ Watch out for hard sweets, lollipops, marshmallows, jelly sweets and hard round chocolates, which may pose a choking risk for younger children.
