NEWS: Staying safe this Halloween

Halloween is almost here, and we're aware there will be lots of people out trick or treating and getting into the Halloween spirit.

Our Rotherham Central officers will be providing extra patrols over the weekend in areas known for anti-social behaviour. In addition to patrols, the Lilian Street South and Gerard Road areas are monitored by CCTV which can identify anyone who may be causing issues. Reports from members of the public assist officers in gathering intelligence and tackling issues such as ASB, so if you see our officers out and about and have any concerns or want to report something that doesn't seem right, please do speak to your neighbourhood officers or report to us by calling 101 or through our online portal. In an emergency, always call 999.

If you’re trick or treating tomorrow, remember to stay safe, stay seen and be mindful of those in your community who may wish to not be involved. Parents, if you have older children who may be going out alone, please make sure you know where they are, and speak to them about staying safe.

We've seized a vehicle that one of the members of our local community reported to us for anti-social driving in the Broom area of Rotherham.

We have been getting several complaints from residents of cars racing around causing nuisance and posing a general risk to other road-users and pedestrians.

As part of our proactive patrols, this car was located, stopped and seized - all because a member of the public reported the vehicle registration to us due to nuisance driving.

The information you provide us with is vital and often helps us build up an intelligence picture which leads to us taking action and achieving results like this.

If you have want to submit information about nuisance vehicles in your area, please contact us online or call us on 101, quoting the vehicle's registration number and details of the offending.

With temperatures reaching 32°C in South Yorkshire today and expected to remain high all weekend, we understand that many young people will want to make the most of the warm weather.

We would like to remind everyone of the serious dangers associated with swimming in open water.

We strongly advise parents to ensure their children are aware of the risks involved in open water swimming.

Jumping into open water. It's not brave.

Be braver and don't give into peer pressure. Walk away from the edge and walk away with your life.

Officers from the Rotherham Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, working alongside Rotherham Council Street Safe Officers, came to the rescue after five baby ducklings became trapped between two barge gates on the canal, separated from their mum.

After a bit of problem-solving, local hero Ian from Cambridge came to the rescue with the magic key needed to open the gates, allowing the ducklings to be safely reunited with their very relieved mum.

A fantastic team effort and a reminder that policing is all about helping our communities – sometimes our smallest residents need us the most! 🦆💙

A big thank you to Ian for his kindness and quick thinking. It’s safe to say this was a very happy ending to the shift!

JAILED: In-depth Rotherham Fortify investigation dismantles gang supplying drugs on an 'industrial scale'

A lengthy and thorough investigation into a dedicated drugs line in Rotherham has resulted in three men being jailed.

In January 2022, Rotherham's Operation Fortify Team launched an investigation into the 'Popeye' drugs line, which was believed to be operating in and around the Kimberworth area.

Over the following 15 months, detectives worked diligently to piece together the hierarchical structure of the enterprise, identifying the key players involved in funnelling harmful substances onto the streets of Rotherham.

Officers executed over a dozen warrants, seizing thousands of pounds in cash and 50 mobile phones in the process. This work identified Andre Walters, Alan Latham and Geoffrey Hooton as all playing a role in the drugs line. Telecoms work showed that whenever a handset containing the drug line was seized, it would be reactivated and used in another mobile phone.

CCTV enquiries captured Walters reactivating the and topping up the 'Popeye' line - including one occasion where he reactivated the line 15 hours after officers seized a phone.

Evidence was uncovered that Latham and Hooton worked shifts to deliver drugs ordered via the 'Popeye' line. Walters effectively employed the duo to provide a 24-hour rapid drug delivery service.

All three men were charged with two counts of supplying a controlled drug of Class A - to which they all pleaded guilty to.

Appearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday (16 June), the men were handed the following sentences:

- Andre Walters, aged 36, of HMP Doncaster, was jailed for eight years and eight months
- Alan Latham, aged 52, of Studmoor Road, Rotherham, was jailed for three years and nine months
- Geoffrey Hooton, aged 45, of Beckett Crescent, Rotherham, was jailed for three years and four months
