Knole - National Trust Knole is one of the country’s most exceptional historic houses, containing world-class collections and surrounded by a 1,000 acre deer park.
(2062)

Sitting proudly within Kent’s last medieval deer park, Knole offers something for everyone. Immerse yourself in the vast estate and follow in the footsteps of tourists who have visited Knole’s showrooms for 400 years

Originally built as an archbishop’s palace, Knole passed through royalty to the Sackville family, who still live here today. Take in the scale and magnificence of this 600 year old estate by exploring the grand courtyards and tranquil Orangery or wander the winding paths in the parkland, still populated by wild deer. Inside the showrooms, art lovers will find Reynolds, Gainsborough and Van Dyck to admire. Textiles enthusiasts can marvel at the 17th century tapestries and furniture that make the collection internationally significant. You can explore the life and loves of former resident Eddy Sackville-West in the Gatehouse Tower and climb the spiral staircase to take in panoramic views from the top. Visitors can find out how our team of conservators care for Knole’s treasures in the new conservation studio and see them in action from Wednesday to Saturday weekly. House rules:
We want our page to be a place where people can share how they feel about the National Trust and talk about their experiences in a fun environment. We welcome feedback – both positive and negative. It helps us to learn and grow. These house rules aim to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves while they’re here:

We ask you to be nice and polite to one another, and respect each other’s views and comments. We ask all users to ensure your contributions are civil, polite, tasteful and suitable for all ages. We won't tolerate disruptive, offensive or abusive behaviour, unlawful or objectionable content. This includes any material which might be defamatory, offensive, infringing, obscene, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive, insulting, threatening, harassing, discriminatory, blasphemous, indecent or otherwise unlawful or objectionable. It also includes any material which is aggressive, argumentative or likely to be construed as bullying, and it includes spamming or repetition - in particular the posting of off-topic material in subject-specific threads or areas.

*Moderation policy*
In general, we don’t moderate posts, except on rare occasions - for example where someone has posted offensive, threatening or libellous content about named or identifiable individuals on our page. We have a duty to protect our staff and volunteers, so while deleting comments is totally out of character for us, our position is that any post containing libellous accusations should be removed. We’ll also remove any posts that in any way target individual teams or members of staff. We will not comment on our staff and volunteers in this way in public forums. If any correspondent has feedback to share about any individual members of staff or teams in the organisation, please get in touch with us directly. If an individual continues to post offensive, threatening or libellous content then we’ll be forced to block that person from the page. Similarly, if any individual repeatedly posts contributions of the nature noted above, we'll again be forced to block that individual from the page (in this scenario, we will have previously warned the individual about their content).

We won’t tolerate postings, content, or links that are racist, sexist or homophobic. We also don’t permit linking to or posting any content which endorses illegal activity, or any activities against the values of the National Trust.
If you’re concerned that a posting or user content has broken any of our house rules or you’re worried about any comment or content then please send us an email to [email protected] and let us know.

Change to closing time at Knole

From Monday 2 November, Knole car park, café, shops and all facilities will close at 4pm as we change to winter opening hours. The Gatehouse Tower and showrooms still close at 4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm.

Some of the showrooms will also close from this date, so that the Collections and House team can start the annual winter clean. We try to keep as much of the house open for as long as we can, but with such a large collection to clean and care for, we close some of the rooms to help with this process.

The following spaces will remain open until 23 December, so there's still plenty to discover: Great Hall, Great Stairs, Ballroom, Reynolds Room, Cartoon Gallery and King's Room.

For more information including booking, visit the Knole website.

Conservation in Action: Model ships in focus | Saturday 31 October

This Saturday, visitors to the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio at Knole will be able to watch conservators at work on some 18th century model ships from Arlington Court in Devon.

There are more than 60 ship models in the collection at Arlington Court, including 36 made by French prisoners whilst held in British prisons during the Napoleonic Wars. There are examples of almost every class of ship of the Napoleonic War period, from great three deckers to smaller sailing frigates with their racing lines.

A recent condition survey identified that these fragile models were in need of conservation work, and now five are in the studio where conservators are carrying out cleaning, consolidation and repairs.

On 31 October conservators from the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio will be working on some of the ships alongside an expert who is advising on and assisting with repairs to delicate rigging. Volunteers will be available to talk through the process, answer questions, and share some insights into this project.

Studio open Wed-Sat, 11am-4pm. Free with normal admission to Knole.

Tools of the Trade at Knole | until Sunday 1 November

If you've visiting Knole in the next couple of weeks, stop by the showrooms to see 'Tools of the Trade', a display about how Knole has been looked after and maintained in the past.

Listen to interviews recorded as part of Knole's oral histories project and see a set of tools that belonged to Sid Doggett, who worked on the estate as a carpenter for around 60 years starting in the 1890s. It was Sid who, in 1906, deposited the famous note in a Perrier bottle in a void in the showrooms, which was discovered in 2017 during the Inspired by Knole project.

Showrooms open daily 11am-4pm (last entry 3.30pm) until 1 November, after which some of the showrooms are closed for winter cleaning and conservation.

Help us look after Knole Park by leaving it as you find it.

Knole Park is a very special place, and its rich natural diversity is recognised and protected. Please don't forage in the park.

Knole is home to some rare species of fungi, as well as trees that produce nuts the the deer eat. All flora and fauna is there to sustain the deer and create the natural habitat which makes up this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Please enjoy exploring the park and looking at this diverse natural space, but please tread carefully and don't pick anything. Thank you.

Lord Sackville's Garden Open Day | Friday 16 October

It's the last chance to visit the private garden at Knole, so come along and explore this vast space in autumn. Discover shades of seasonal colour on the trees as well as autumnal planting in the borders. There's also a natural wilderness area, woodland pathways, and kitchen garden to explore.

Knole Estate Gardener Alex says that on this open day, looking particularly impressive and interesting are:
- colourful dahlias in the main herbaceous borders.
- bright orange leaves of the Nyssa sylvatica tree
- autumn colour on the large Liquidambar styraciflua tree
- the Arbutus unedo, or strawberry tree
- red berries on the Crataegus crus-galli, or cockspur hawthorn, in the herbaceous border

Garden open 11am-4pm, last entry 3.30pm. Tickets are £5 per person and normal admission to Knole applies. Book tickets online or buy from the Visitor Centre on the day.
