📣 Unpaid carers in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland - we need your input!

If you provide unpaid care for a family member, friend or neighbour, Healthwatch would like to hear about what's important to you.

They are looking at how unpaid carers can have meaningful opportunities to share their experiences, raise issues that matter to them, and help influence the services and support available locally.

Your feedback will help shape an approach that works for carers and ensures your voice is heard.

📣 Unpaid Carers - We Want to Hear From You!

Are you an unpaid carer in Middlesbrough? Your experiences matter, and we want to make sure carers have a real voice in shaping the services and support that affect them.

We don't want to make assumptions about what involvement should look like. Instead, we want to hear from you. What issues matter most? What would you like to have a say about? How would you like to be involved?

💬 Share your thoughts and help us create opportunities that work for carers. Your feedback will help shape a more meaningful approach to carer involvement across our communities.

This month, our Board had the privilege of hearing from Barry and Mica from Independent Voices about their experiences of accessing services and what could make them better.

Hearing directly from people with lived experience is invaluable. It helps ensure voices are heard, challenges are understood, and services continue to improve to better meet people's needs.

Thank you, Barry and Mica, for helping us learn and improve. ✅

Skills for People in Teesside

October is Speak Up Month 📅

💬Speak Up – Listen Up – Follow Up 💬

Last week, Mica and Barry spoke to Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board about what good support looks like 👍

There were 25 people on the call from councils and other organisations around Teesside, including the Police and Fire Brigade ️🚔🚒🏥

They talked about:
🗣 their experiences when using different services
🗣 things that help us to feel supported
🗣 things that can help and ways to make things better
🗣 the importance of knowing that everyone has different needs

This is to help more people and services to understand how people with a learning disability can be supported 😊

Sunday 18th October is Anti-Slavery Day.

TSAB are supporting Anti-Slavery Day on Sunday 18th October.
Victims are exploited, controlled, and often too afraid to speak out, would you recognise the signs?

Modern slavery can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Victims may be subjected to exploitation, coercion, threats, or control and may not always recognise themselves as victims.
Spotting the signs can make a life-changing difference. By staying alert, asking questions and knowing how to report concerns, we can all help identify and support victims of exploitation.
Together, we can play our part in preventing modern slavery and ensuring people receive the help, support, and protection they need.

Great conversations, valuable connections, and raising awareness of adult safeguarding.

Yesterday, we attended the Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees Health & Care Ambassador Programme event, where we had the opportunity to speak with both professionals and members of the public about the work of the Teeswide Safeguarding Adults Board (TSAB).

It was fantastic to share information about adult safeguarding, discuss how people can recognise and respond to concerns, and highlight the range of resources and learning opportunities available across the Tees area.

We also managed to secure a number of responses to our TSAB Annual Survey, helping us gather valuable feedback to shape our future work.

If you haven't already completed the survey, there's still time to have your say. You can complete it online: https://www.tsab.org.uk/campaigns-and-initiatives/annual-survey-2026-2027/

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us. Events like these are a great reminder of the importance of working together to keep adults with care and support needs safe from abuse and neglect.

💚 Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s talk, listen, and support better mental health together.

Talking about mental health can feel hard. Many of us worry about saying the wrong thing, and that can stop conversations before they begin. But these conversations matter.

Download the Mental Health Foundation's free tips on how to talk, and listen, about mental health- https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/campaigns/world-mental-health-day

Mental Health UK also offers a range of free resources, practical guides and self-help tools covering topics including stress, anxiety and burnout to improving sleep and resilience - https://mentalhealth-uk.org/help-and-information/downloadable-resources/ -4

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October. The theme for 2026 is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”.
