These super spooky Halloween posters date from 1928 and 1929 and come from the archives of Cranleigh Women’s Institute (WI). The Cranleigh branch was founded in 1921 by Lady Bonham and its archive includes over 600 poster designs, mostly drawn by Mrs Margaret Evershed (nee Randall), who was born in Cranleigh in 1904 and lived in Ewhurst. In those days meetings were only held in the afternoon and many children attended, either with their mothers or arriving after school, so Margaret drew beautiful bright and colourful posters often featuring children which appealed to the young attendees.

Happy 40th birthday to the M25! Construction began on the London Orbital Motorway in 1975, and the final section was finally opened on 29 October 1986. Love it or loathe we’ve all been stuck on it, but did you know that Surrey History Centre holds the South East Region Motorway Archive which includes Junctions 1 to 15 of the M25? The archive contains press cuttings, official reports, slides, official brochures and recollections of those who worked on it. You can discover more with our online catalogue (SHC ref 6594/K/) https://orlo.uk/ogTlY

We've recently had an unprecedented volume of enquiries which we're always pleased to receive, but please bear with us as we have only a limited number of staff to answer your questions.

We understand that developing technologies like AI can help users to identify archives holding historic records, and to navigate potential obstacles in gaining access to records. However, AI tools and agents sometimes invent records or references that do not exist, or misinterpret catalogue information and provide a misleading idea of what survives in the archives.

If you are looking for documents, we strongly advise you to check our catalogue first at https://orlo.uk/IGY5S or contact us at [email protected].

AI-generated requests can be extremely long, and that makes it hard for staff to identify what is needed. If you are using AI to draft an email to us, please double-check that the message contains a clear question or request that reflects what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to help.
