𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟏𝟎 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭

This morning, we celebrated Year 10 students who have had a fantastic first half term by enjoying a well-deserved breakfast! 70 students were invited who achieved zero behaviour points and over 98% attendance, this is a brilliant achievement and reflects their commitment to their learning and making positive choices in school.
A huge well done to all 70 students! Keep up the fantastic work.
You should be very proud of yourselves!

As we all know Y7 students have begun reading Wonderscape as a whole cohort reading initiative, with the intention to show how reading can inspire imagination. Over the past few weeks tutors have been dedicated one morning to reading the book as a class, building on literacy skills and confidence around oracy and how we can inspire imagination through word play and world-building.

Today form tutors directed and supported their tutees with their first creative project to document the story so far. We saw, a constructed door that all three children, Arthur, Ren and Cecily enter the Wonderscape portal through! We also saw some mask making, designing masks that visually represent one of the three protagonists and some collage/mood-board making to document the first 2 chapters.
It was great seeing all form groups working together, collaboratively, to create something reflective and fun!

𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟕 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚!

Every half-term students will be invited to a celebration cinema to recognise their individual successes and achievements. This half-term students were challenged to reach 100 achievement points to receive an invite, which was accomplished by over 60 students! What an incredible achievement.
Form tutors also nominated 2 tutees each, who had stood out to them and got involved this half-term. It was a fantastic morning, full of pop-corn, snacks and fun.

We finish this half-term on 22804 achievement points and a cohort of year 7 students who are a little more confident, a little more resilient and a whole lot of Winston.

We look forward to seeing you all on the other side of the half-term, where we do it all again.

Enjoy a well deserved rest and be ready to come back even better for Autumn term (part 2).

𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟕'𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦! Part 1

As we bring our first half-term to a close and year 7's first ever, I think it important to recognise how incredibly well year 7 have adapted, thrived, and settled into Winston. We could not be prouder of them and the start they have had to this academic year and their secondary school journey.

This past week has been a busy one with a few events worth noting and reporting on.

𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟕 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦

Mr Jones organised and ran our first every Year 7 interform. Each form group put forward a football team to represent their tutor group and we saw over 100 students turn up and get involved, partaking in a community event and representing the year group in a positive way.
The final game came down to AJA and ALI, it was a close game with some very competitive tactics and goals scored. In the end, it was Mr Lighton's form who took the win, becoming the FIRST ever Y7 interform winners. The trophy lift will take place in our first assembly back after half-term, a milestone moment for Mr Lighton's form, the question is... will they be able to maintain their 'winner' status next half-term at the next interform event?
Well done to every student who participated and to those, both parents and students, who also showed up to support!

Year 8 have been busy in the textiles room with Ms Davies applying an applique design for the front of their cushion cover.

The level of challenge was immense, but we are glad to say that year 8 have risen to meet that challenge. Some brilliant creative designs, a room full of fully engaged students and lots achieved.

It was great to hear students say how proud they were of themselves and to be really pleased with what they had achieved. We clearly have some budding designers in the making!

It has been a fantastic week of football-related opportunities for students at Winston, with two exciting trips giving students the chance to experience different sides of the football world.
The week began with a brilliant visit to Wembley, where a group of students took part in a special morning with BBC Bitesize. The students were incredibly lucky to meet former England and Arsenal star Alex Scott and former England goalkeeper David James. They had the opportunity to hear about their experiences and careers in football, as well as gain some helpful information about the wide range of careers available within the football industry.

The excitement continued with a second football trip, this time as a reward for students who have worked hard on Chelsea Provision over the last year and made a positive start to the new term.

The students were extremely lucky to meet some of the Chelsea first-team players, making the day one they certainly won't forget! There were plenty of photos taken and lots of goodies signed, creating some brilliant memories for the group.
The students were then given a tour of the Chelsea Academy training ground, where they got to see behind the scenes and learn more about how young players develop at one of the world's most famous football clubs. They also had the opportunity to speak to a member of the Academy analysis team and find out more about the important work that goes on behind the scenes to support players and teams.
Both trips provided students with memorable experiences, valuable advice and an insight into the many opportunities that football can offer.
Most importantly, the week has shown that hard work, positive behaviour and making good choices can lead to exciting opportunities. Students who consistently demonstrate excellent behaviour, commitment and a positive attitude can put themselves in a strong position to benefit from future rewards and opportunities with Chelsea and other partners.
A huge well done to everyone who took part and represented Winston so positively. What a week!

The Winston Catering Team has once again demonstrated an excellent range of skills for our Year 10 food students by teaching them to break down and fillet a whole chicken.

Students learn skills throughout their time in the kitchen that prepare them for their final practical exams.
Huge thank you to Carol and to Kevin for providing the resources and time to work with our students.

This week, in the lead up to World Mental Health Day on Saturday the 10th of October, we have been focusing on promoting positive wellbeing at school. Following a wellbeing assembly, students were invited to take part in a different activity each day of the week, aimed at bringing people together and exploring different ways of looking after our emotional wellbeing.

On Mindful Monday students were encouraged to make a Wellbeing Pledge, committing to one action they will take to improve their wellbeing. On Talk About it Tuesday students made origami and paper fortune tellers, as an opportunity to learn a new skill, or just to come along and meet some new people. On Wellbeing Wednesday students were invited to a relaxation techniques workshop to learn mindfulness and grounding strategies. On Thoughtful Thursday students wrote words of encouragement on balloons to lift each other up! Finally, on Feel Good Friday, students took part in arts, crafts and games at lunch time to socialise and unwind, ready for the weekend.

On Monday 12th October Miss Evans and I took the student tech team to visit ETC (Electric Lighting Control) office in Ealing.

ETC are one of the world's leading theatre lighting companies with their software most commonly used in venues such as The National theatre and The West End. When we arrived, the staff were very welcoming and gave us a tour of their building. We were particularly impressed by The Playhouse Theatre room, which had a painted wall of audience members and one of them being the founder of the company Fred Foster, which you see in our group photo.
After the tour the lighting training begun. There was one console between two students, the students got to use all different types of console. The Gio @ 5 console is the one we use in the Rhoda, so it was great the students got the chance to practice operating this console ready for The Rock Of Ages musical at the Rhoda this February. Jen the lady teaching the students was fantastic she taught the students how to patch a lighting fixture, how to build a cue list and how to programme effects. ETC provided the students with USB's so they could save their show and continue to finish it with the free ETC software in their own time.

Overall, we had a lovely day learning all about the ETC software and about the lighting industry in general, the students were able to ask questions and gain insight into what a future in lighting could look like.

We are looking forward to our next visit.

Year 9 have been exploring a wider variety of artistic techniques that influence our world - this Autumn we have been looking at Animation and the art of creating characters and stop motion picture. Our inspiration is the world-famous Tim Burton and his films such as 'The Co**se Bride', 'Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'Alice in Wonderland'.
Our students have been recalling their knowledge from year 8 where they practised drawing portraiture. To develop this skill further, they have used Tim Burton's distinct style to edit proportion and features, creating their own gothic character. After watching clips of his films, they identified key traits that make his work so recognisable. Exaggerated features, dark shadowing, swirling forms and macabre themes inspired their own portrait characters.
We focused on creating a border to our animated portraits using monochrome pattern and then the students planned and created their own character to fill the centre. For this they chose to use soft pastel, pen or watercolour.
After the half term, we will be developing this theme further, exploring themes such as 'down the rabbit hole' to create pieces focused on perspective drawing.
The Year 9's have done incredibly well with this scheme of work so far and we look forward to displaying their outcomes.

Year 9, in Mr Wait's geography lessons, have been using a computer simulation to plan to protect people from natural disasters. Mr Wait said:
This half term Year 9 have been posed with a number of questions about 'Can geographers.....?' This week was the turn of 'Can geographers stop natural disasters?'. Year 9 used a computer simulation to look at planning, predicting and preventing to save lives in the event of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or tropical storm.
We are glad to say that year 9 were great planners and managed to save many lives and settlements in the simulation.
