slim dominion rather than integration with India. In 1938 Bahadur Yar Jung was elected President of the MIM which had a cultural and religious manifesto. It soon acquired political complexion and became aligned with the Muslim League in British India.[citation needed]

The Razakars (volunteers), a Muslim paramilitary organization aimed at resisting merger with India, was linked to the MIM. In total up to 150,000 Razakar soldiers were mobilized to fight against the Indian Union and for the independence of the Hyderabad State against Indian integration. After the integration of the Hyderabad state with India, the MIM was banned in 1948. The Razakar leader Qasim Rizvi was jailed from 1948 to 1957, and then he was released on the condition to go to Pakistan, where he was granted asylum.[12]

Before leaving, Qasim Rizvi handed over the responsibility of whatever remained of the Ittehadul Muslimeen, to Abdul Wahid Owaisi,a lawyer. Abdul Wahed Owaisi restructured the Party and Organised it into All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.[13][14] After Abdul Wahed Owaisi, his son Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi took control of AIMIM in 1975 and was referred to as Salar E Millat (commander of the community)

The All India Majlis Ittehad ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is a political party dedicated to protect and advance the rights of Muslims communities in India. It bears true faith and allegiance to the Islam. MIM had to change its vision after Nizam rule ended and sweeping changes were made in its vision according to the Indian Constiution. It strongly believes in the nation’s democracy and strives to protect and enhance its quality by effective representation from local municipal councils to the parliament

In 1960, AIMIM won the Mallepally ward of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. In 1962, Salahuddin won from Patharghatti assembly seat as an Independent candidate and later from Charminar constituency in 1967. In 1972, he won from Yakutpura and later in 1978, again from Charminar.[citation needed]

In 1984 AIMIM emerged victorious in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha Seat and Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi represented Hyderabad till 2004. Since then, Salahuddin's elder son Asaduddin Owaisi represents the seat of Hyderabad.[18][19][20] Mohammad Majid Hussain of the AIMIM was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Greater Hyderabad on January 2, 2012.[21]

AIMIM was once reduced to 1 Assembly seat in Andhra Pradesh in 1994.[22] On 12 November 2012, Asaduddin Owaisi announced the withdrawal of support to the UPA government citing communal policies of the current congress led government.[23][24]

In the Hyderabad Municipality election of 2009 AIMIM won 43 out of 150 seats in the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad[25] and appointed the current Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Mohammad Majid Hussain.[26] Party president Asaduddin Owaisi won Sansad Ratna award for his outstanding performance in lok Sabha.[27]

AIMIM made its entry into Maharashtra state by winning 13 seats in Nanded-Waghala city municipal council polls held on October 2012.[28] AIMIM made its entry into Karnataka state by winning 6 seats in Karnataka local body elections held in March 2013.[citation needed] In 2014 Elections,AIMIM contested on 35 MLA(20 in Telangana and 15 in Seemandhra) and 6 MP seats in undivided Andhra Pradesh,but was not able to win any extra seat and won same 7 Assembly seats and 1 lone Lok Sabha seat of Old Hyderabad city.[29]

In 2014 elections,in its efforts to win a majority of divisions in the Nizamabad comprising a sizeable Muslim population and also the urban Assembly seat, the MIM this time focused its attention on the constituency giving it the second priority after state capital Hyderabad.[30] MIM won 16 divisions, as much as the Congress, of the total 50 in Nizamabad city Municipal Corporation.[31] However to their hard luck they lost the assembly seat to TRS.[32] Later on MIM made an alliance with TRS for sharing posts in Nizamabad.MIM also bagged the Bhainsa municipality by winning 12 wards after a gap of 10 years

The Party has fielded Hindus in various assembly and local body elections.[34][35][36][37][38] The AIMIM selected Alampally Pochiah as its First Mayor in the City.[39] MIM had three Hindu Hyderabad mayors- K. Satyanarayana and Alampalli Pochaiah.[40] A Muralidhar Reddy, Hindu candidate being fielded for an assembly seat by Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen from Rajendranagar constituency,though he lost the election.[41]

Interestingly in 2013 local elections party fielded a woman candidate from Hindu OBC,V.Bhanumathi and won election against Hajira Sultana from congress by 1282 votes.
