European Union in Kenya Official account of the European Union 🇪🇺 Delegation to Kenya 🇰🇪. Repost /Follows ≠ endorsements. This enables the EU to speak and act as one in world affairs.

The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political partnership between 28 democratic European countries that are working together to improve the lives of their citizens. It has delivered half a century of peace, stability and prosperity, helped raise living standards, and is progressively building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services and capital move among Member States as freely as within a country. With more than 500 million inhabitants, which account for one quarter of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and one fifth of worldwide trade, the EU is a global player. It is now the largest economy and the largest exporter and importer of goods and services in the world. As a global player, the EU has developed a differentiated and multi-layered foreign policy, using a variety of tools that range from political and security instruments to development cooperation. More than twenty years ago, EU Member States agreed to create a Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). In an international and globalised world, the 28 countries that make up the EU have greater weight and influence when they act together as the European Union, rather than as 28 individual nations. The Government of Kenya and the EU have enjoyed a long-standing partnership for close to three decades. The first formal link between the EU and Kenya was forged back in 1968 at Arusha when the East African Community signed the Arusha Convention establishing trade relations between the then three EAC partner states (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and the then European Community. At the start of the EU-Kenya Partnership, the main emphasis was on providing technical and financial aid to rural development and food production, development of hydro-electric power, development of feeder roads as well as training and development of technical education facilities. Today, thanks to the provision of duty free, quota free access into the EU market for goods originating from Kenya, trade is now the centrepiece of EU-Kenya relations. As a major source of development assistance to Kenya, the EU has been supportive of reform and poverty reduction policies, contributing to initiatives in the field of good governance, democratisation and human rights. The EU and the Government of Kenya are partners in championing growth for prosperity.

A strong partnership at sea 🇪🇺🇰🇪⚓

Today we have delivered our first-ever support to Kenya under the European Peace Facility.

In Mombasa, the Kenya Navy received the first deliveries of non-lethal equipment as part of Ksh 3 billion in support to the Kenya Defence Forces — helping strengthen maritime security, search and rescue, and the protection of Kenya’s blue economy.

A safer sea means safer communities, safer trade routes and a stronger region 🌍

The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Kenya, Andreas Peschke, accompanied by Director for Security and Defense Policy (European External Action Service – EEAS) Maciej Stadejek, has handed over non-lethal equipment to the Kenya Navy at Mtongwe base.

The Sh3 billion equipment is courtesy of the European Peace Facility Support, and it is the first of its kind for the military in the region.

Director Maciej Stadejek noted that the equipment will be useful to combat terror-related threats on the Kenya-Somalia border and will steer Kenya as a benchmark for security modernisation.

Kenya Navy Commander Major General Paul Otieno termed the handover as a timely initiative that will strengthen the cooperation between Kenya and the EU in safeguarding the country and the region, augmenting its capacity to fight modern-day threats to peace and security.

🇪🇺🇰🇪 Strengthening women’s participation and leadership in counter-terrorism

From 28 to 30 October, Nairobi hosted the first in-person meeting of the Reference Group of Experts on Strengthening Women’s Participation and Leadership in Counter-Terrorism.

Organised by the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ), with funding from the European Union, and hosted by the Government of Kenya through the National Counter Terrorism Centre - Kenya, the meeting brought together practitioners, policymakers, academics and civil society representatives from across Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Over three days, participants shared experiences, examined barriers to women’s participation and advancement, and explored practical ways to strengthen their leadership in security and criminal justice institutions.

The discussions will inform the development of a Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) Framework Document, aimed at providing practical guidance to policymakers and practitioners.

The EU remains committed to supporting women’s full, equal, safe and meaningful participation in counter-terrorism, alongside its partners and with respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Trade that delivers 🤝🌍 Since 2016, EU-Africa trade has grown strongly, creating opportunities across the continent.
Kenya’s Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the EU is one clear success story of this ongoing partnership 🇰🇪🇪🇺 It is the most ambitious EU trade agreement with an African country in terms of sustainability.
