The Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) is the main funder of research activities in Luxembourg.

The FNR invests public funds and private donations into research projects in various branches of science and the humanities, with an emphasis on selected core strategic areas. Furthermore, the FNR supports and coordinates activities to strengthen the link between science and society and to raise awareness for research. It also advises the Luxembourg government on research policy and strategy. The

Forests are dynamic ecosystems – they are used to change but it takes time to adapt. Climate change means drastic changes and trees are struggling to keep up, and many of them are dying as a result - also in Luxembourg. Smart materials for a sustainable future: Emmanuel Defay has been active in Luxembourg research since 2014, leading research on developing “smart materials” that could make cooling systems and electricity generation far more efficient and environmentally friendly, by using electricity or waste heat instead of harmful refrigerants or extra fuel. His work shows that these technologies are no longer just lab ideas but could realistically be scaled up to help cool buildings, preserve food, and produce energy more sustainably in the future. Over 50 years after the first Moon landing, interest is growing in returning. What was the case in the 1960s still rings true: Going to the Moon, with all the equipment needed, is beyond expensive. Using resources already on the Moon is considered the best way to limit the expense – researchers like Francisco Javier Guerrero Gonzalez are working to make this possible.

Since arriving in Luxembourg in 2009, Djamila Aouada from .lu’s SnT has led various projects combining Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence, helping pave the way for technologies including rehabilitation for stroke survivors, access control, and autonomous navigation in space.
