Today its remit has developed and expanded to include the
1. Responsibility for the National Research and Innovation Strategy 2020 and related Action Plan.

Xjenza Malta (Science Malta) is the Malta Government Agency acting as the National R&D and Space funding agency, policy development and implementation body, in the area of Research, Innovation and Space. The Malta Council for Science & Technology acting for and on behalf of the Foundation for Science and Technology, is a public body established by central government in 1995 with the mandate of advising government on science and technology policy. Responsibility for Policy recommendations in the area of science and technology as well as representation of the Government of Malta in EU fora such as: ERAC, ESFRI, JRC, DG working parties, EIT, SFIC, COST, ERAC, MoCo, SGHRM and the High Level Space Working Party.
3. The management and administration of the National and EU Research and Innovation Funding Programmes.
4. The setting up of the first National Interactive Science Centre, science communication and science popularisation. The Council is also responsible for supporting entities, being academic institutions or enterprises to join foreign consortia to undertake large-scale multi-national research activities. Typically, such projects would have public-private partnerships set up at a European level to address strategic areas where research and innovation are essential to European competitiveness. The Council also enters into Bilateral Agreements with other countries

Moments from the first day of R&I Days 2026, where Xjenza Malta hosted Malta’s R&I Community to showcase over 50 projects supported through national funding programmes.

The R&I EXPO featured prototypes from 12 projects, while the R&I Conference highlighted over 40 completed projects. The day concluded with an awards ceremony and a networking reception, celebrating Malta’s research achievements.

Xjenza Malta and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) invite eligible entities to collaborate through the SINO-MALTA Fund 2026 Joint Call for R&I Proposals.

Thematic Areas:
⚙️ SMART Manufacturing (Additive Manufacturing & Flexible Automation)
⚡ Renewable Energy and Storage
🌊 Resource Efficiency and Valorisation (Marine Resources & Turning Waste into Resource)

Up to €200,000 per project for Malta-based entities
Each consortium must include at least one Malta-based entity and one China-based entity.

🇲🇹 Xjenza Malta ospitat lill-komunità tar-Riċerka u l-Innovazzjoni (R&I) ta’ Malta għat-tieni jum tal-R&I Days 2026 fit-30 ta’ Ottubru, u ċċelebrat it-30 anniversarju tal-Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

L-avveniment ippreżenta proġetti ta’ suċċess tal-MSCA li jinvolvu riċerkaturi Maltin u enfasizza l-opportunitajiet ta’ finanzjament Ewropej, il-kollaborazzjoni internazzjonali u l-karrieri fir-riċerka. Waqt diskussjoni tal-panel ġie esplorat ir-rwol tal-mentoraġġ u l-appoġġ fl-avvanz tar-riċerka fil-fruntieri tal-għarfien.

Preżenti għall-avveniment kien hemm is-Sur Silvio Scerri, Uffiċjal Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Xjenza Malta, is-Sur Graham Wilkie, Kap tat-Taqsima tal-MSCA u ċ-Ċittadini, COFUND u Attivitajiet ta’ Appoġġ fi ħdan l-Aġenzija Eżekuttiva Ewropea għar-Riċerka, u l-Professur Maria Leptin, President tal-Kunsill Ewropew għar-Riċerka.

🇬🇧 Xjenza Malta hosted Malta’s R&I Community for the second day of R&I Days 2026 on 30th October, celebrating 30 years of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

The event showcased successful MSCA projects involving Maltese researchers, highlighting European funding opportunities, international collaboration and research careers. A panel discussion explored the role of mentorship and support in advancing frontier research.

Present at the event were Mr Silvio Scerri, Chief Executive Officer of Xjenza Malta, Mr Graham Wilkie, Head of Unit for MSCA and Citizens, COFUND and Support Activities at the European Research Executive Agency, and Professor Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council.

🇲🇹 Xjenza Malta laqgħet lill-komunità tar-Riċerka u l-Innovazzjoni (R&I) ta’ Malta għall-ewwel jum tal-R&I Days 2026, fejn ġew ippreżentati aktar minn 50 proġett appoġġjat permezz ta’ programmi ta’ finanzjament nazzjonali.

L-R&I EXPO inkludiet prototipi minn 12-il proġett, filwaqt li l-Konferenza R&I enfasizzat aktar minn 40 proġett li tlestew. Il-ġurnata ntemmet b’ċerimonja ta’ premjazzjoni u riċeviment ta’ networking, fejn ġew iċċelebrati l-kisbiet ta’ Malta fil-qasam tar-riċerka.

Preżenti għall-avveniment kien hemm l-Onor. Clifton Grima, Ministru għall-Ġustizzja, ir-Riċerka u l-Innovazzjoni, is-Sur Johan Galea, Segretarju Permanenti fi ħdan il-Ministeru għall-Ġustizzja, ir-Riċerka u l-Innovazzjoni, is-Sur Silvio Scerri, Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ Xjenza Malta, u s-Sa Sabine Simross, Esperta Anzjana fir-Relazzjonijiet Esterni tal-Kunsill Xjentifiku tal-Kunsill Ewropew tar-Riċerka (ERC).

Xjenza Malta’s CEO, Mr Silvio Scerri, was honoured to welcome Hon. Mehmet Fatih Kacır Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malta, Barkın Kayaoğlu and the accompanying Turkish delegation to Villa Bighi.

The visit provided an opportunity to highlight the successful five-year collaboration between Xjenza Malta and TÜBİTAK, which has supported the funding of nineteen joint R&I projects, discuss the significant growth of Türkiye’s space sector and explore new avenues to further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.

Join us for the National Launch of the European Partnership for Resilient Cultural Heritage, bringing together stakeholders from across the cultural heritage, research and innovation communities to explore new opportunities for collaboration and funding.

With €3.5 million allocated over seven years, the Partnership will support research and innovation aimed at strengthening the resilience of cultural heritage and connecting Maltese researchers and organisations with partners across Europe.

Stedinna lill-istaff kollu tagħna biex jattendu sessjoni speċjali ta’ għarfien dwar is-saħħa flimkien ma' Dr Salvina Zrinzo.

🇬🇧 This Pink October, Xjenza Malta and Esplora have invested heavily for our well-being.

We invited all our staff members to join us for a dedicated health and awareness session led by leading expert in the field Dr. Salvina Zrinzo.

This gathering offered a meaningful opportunity for our team to explore breast cancer awareness through the lens of both science and practical, everyday health.

The Xjenza Malta’s Voucher Programme helps researchers and innovators take the next steps towards protecting, developing and commercialising their innovations, with support delivered through pre-approved Xjenza Malta service providers.

The vouchers cover:
1️⃣ Intellectual Property Registration Voucher – Support for the registration and protection of intellectual property.
2️⃣ Business Plan Voucher – Support to develop and strengthen your business plan and assess the commercial potential of your innovation.
3️⃣ Market Discovery Voucher – Support to explore your target market, create a pitch deck and set-up meetings with potential investors. Applicants must have a completed Business Plan to be eligible.

To be eligible, applicants must hold an approved Xjenza Malta applied research grant and have reached TRL 5 or above. Applications are currently open till 1 December.

🇲🇹 Biex niċċelebraw Jum il-Kottonera, Xjenza Malta u Esplora ngħaqdu mal-Fondazzjoni Kottonera u lqajna ’l fuq minn 400 student u aktar minn 100 edukatur minn skejjel tal-madwar għal ġurnata ta’ skoperta xjentifika.

Għalina bħala entità, li nispiraw lill-ġenerazzjoni li tielgħa dwar STEAM hija fil-qalba tar-Responsabbiltà Soċjali Korporattiva tagħna u għalhekk f’din l-okkażjoni tellajna wkoll programm interessanti għall-istudenti li żaruna permezz tat-Team ta’ Esplora.

Ħadna wkoll l-okkażjoni u fakkarna lill-istudenti biex jgħarrfu lill-familji tagħhom li r-residenti tal-Kottonera u l-Kalkara jgawdu minn skont kontinwu tul is-sena kollha ta’ 20% fuq il-biljetti tad-dħul billi sempliċement juru l-karta tal-identità malli jaslu.

🇬🇧 To celebrate Jum il-Kottonera, Xjenza Malta and Esplora teamed up with the Kottonera Foundation to welcome over 400 students and 100+ educators from local schools for a day of hands-on discovery.

Inspiring young minds on STEAM is central to our Corporate Social Responsibility and during this event learners had the opportunity to appreciate a special programme organised by our Esplora Team.

On this special occasion we also reminded our young learners to let their families know that Cottonera and Kalkara residents enjoy an ongoing 20% discount on admission throughout the year by just showing their ID card upon arrival.

Xjenza Malta hosted a briefing session for the European Space Agency PECS MT5. Participants had the opportunity to learn more on the 5th PECS Funding Call, while receiving practical advice and guidance on how to prepare for a stronger proposal.
Prof. Gianluca Valentino, Chief Executive Officer at Semablu and Ms Maria Elena Muscat, Head of Projects at AcrossLimits (Malta) shared how funding has supported their work and contributed to achieving their objectives.
