The date of today’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists was chosen in commemoration of the assassination of two French journalists in Mali on 2 November 2013. Globally, 85 % to 90 % of attacks including killings of journalists remain unsolved or without legal consequences. Between 1 April 2024 and 30 November 2025, police in Germany registered 818 politically motivated criminal offences against the media, among them 89 violent crimes. In Malta, five persons have been convicted in relation with the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia (pictured) on 16 October 2017, while the person(s) commissioning the murder remain at large.

All these facts serve as a reminder that strong institutions, including strong media, are vital for the functioning of democracies and need to be protected against crimes before they can even happen.

🇪🇺 Europe remains open to sincere negotiations, but Russia refuses to come to the table. That refusal carries real consequences.


🇺🇦 Ukraine and its 🇪🇺 European partners have consistently backed diplomatic solutions based on international law. Moscow, meanwhile, continues to target civilian infrastructure and carry out hybrid threats across Europe. Sanctions are the direct response: a clear message that aggression incurs heavy costs and that European resolve will not weaken.


The longer Russia drags out this conflict, the higher the price it pays. That is the core purpose of the sanctions regime, and the basis for any credible path to peace.
