Part two of the Kunene Regional Genocide Remembrance Day programe took place at the Kunene Regional Heroes Shrine (Okozongumbati), where dignitaries paid tribute to the victims of the 1904–1908 Genocide.

Keynote speaker Dr. Kaire Mbuende, Governor of the Kunene region, Hon. Vipuakuje Muharukua, alongside traditional leaders and other dignitaries, laid wreaths in honour of the genocide victims.

RESILIENCE

Director General of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Kaire Mbuende, has called on Namibians to reflect on the Genocide through the lens of resilience and resistance, rather than glorifying the atrocities inflicted during German colonial rule.

Delivering the keynote address at the Kunene Regional Genocide Remembrance Day commemoration in Opuwo, Dr. Mbuende acknowledged the courage and determination of affected communities who fought relentlessly against colonial oppression.

He further encouraged Namibians, especially the youth, to take both academic education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) seriously as key drivers of national development and empowerment.

Kunene Governor, Hon. Vipuakuje Muharukua, has called on Namibians to remain united as the country continues to reflect on its history during the Genocide Remembrance Day commemoration in Opuwo.

The Governor further urged the youth to learn about these significant historical events from elders, emphasizing the importance of preserving the nation’s history and passing it on to future generations.

GENOCIDE REMEMBRANCE DAY 2026

Proceedings are officially underway at the Opuwo Open Market for the Kunene Regional Genocide Remembrance Day commemoration.

Dignitaries have arrived and the programme has now commenced as the region joins the nation in honouring and remembering the victims and survivors of the 1904–1908 Genocide.
