REJOINDER TO BABACHIR DAVID LAWAL: THE GENESIS OF INGRATITUDE AND THE HYPOCRISY OF A DISMISSED GRASS-CUTTER

Babachir David Lawal’s latest outburst against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar reveals more about his personal prejudices, historical ingratitude, and current political irrelevance than it does about the internal democracy of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Writing on behalf of the entire National Youth Wing of the ADC, and speaking for millions of Nigerian youths whose collective future has been systematically plundered by characters of your extraction, I write this not just with fury, but with a profound, motivating sadness. It is a tragic historical spectacle to watch a man who once occupied the apex of public administration degrade into an empty political shell—an unrepentant religious bigot and a fantastically corrupt politician who resorts to cheap, vulgar tribal warmongering because his access to national patronage has been permanently severed.

Two deeply pathology-driven factors explain your current state of political hysteria.

First is your long-standing hostility toward Muslims and the Fulani—a glaring irony when placed against the historical trajectory of your own life. Let us ask you directly, Babachir David Lawal: where would you be today without the historical benevolence of the very Fulani race you now vehemently demonize? When you were an unknown quantity treading the technical fringes, it was the late President Muhammadu Buhari, a Fulani man, who pulled you from obscurity and gave you your first major structural breakthrough within the PTF under the Afri-Project Consortium. When your career floundered, it was Fulani professionals like the late Ahmed Salihijo who sustained your technical enterprise. When your political fortunes turned sour, it was the same Fulani Muslim, Muhammadu Buhari, who elevated you to national prominence by appointing you as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

How does a man who owes his entire socio-political existence to the structural upliftment of Fulani leaders turn around to tag an entire demographic as "irredentist hegemonists"? Your public life stands as a monument to absolute ingratitude. For decades, the Fulani community shielded, supported, and fed your ambitions when you were virtually in the political bush. Yet, the moment the elite consensus no longer favors your bloated ego, your default strategy is to set the country ablaze with toxic sectarian slurs.

Yet Alhaji Atiku Abubakar's public life stands as a direct contradiction to the narrow ethnic and religious labels you seek to impose on him. The Waziri's family reflects Nigeria's beautiful diversity; his first wife is Yoruba, and another wife, Jennifer, comes from the South-East. For decades, he has built bridges across regional, ethnic, and religious divides. He can be criticized on matters of policy or political judgment, but it is intellectually dishonest to portray him as a religious hegemonist.

This brings us to the second factor driving your erratic behavior: your complete exposure as a hypocrite of the most vulgar order. You describe the ADC presidential primary as a "disgraceful charade massively rigged at all levels." If the party’s structures are so fundamentally compromised, we probe you with this critical question: why did your vaunted conscience remain completely silent when your own biological cousin, Omar Suleiman, emerged as the ADC governorship candidate for Adamawa State under these exact same primary guidelines? Is an election only clean, pure, and transparent when your family eats from the table, but "massively rigged" the moment your boardroom conspiracies fail to install your preferred presidential outcome?

The bitter reality you must confront on your village farm is that you are an empty political shell with absolutely zero electoral value. You are a serial political nomad who rode Buhari’s coattails from the ANPP to the CPC and the APC, only to jump to the Labour Party under the manipulative guise of religious advocacy when you failed to secure a vice-presidential slot. When that vehicle failed to yield personal power, you drifted into the ADC. You do not possess ideological beliefs, Babachir; you possess an insatiable addiction to state power.

Your desperate attempt to mask your past corruption allegations behind the veil of a moral crusade will not work. Millions of youths in Nigeria remember exactly why you were disgraced and kicked out of office in 2017. You are the face of the infamous N544 million Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE) grass-cutting scandal. While young, displaced citizens were dying of starvation in IDP camps across the Northeast, your firm, Rholavision Engineering, was busy funneling blood money directly into commercial bank accounts where you remained the sole signatory. Out of that massive contract framework, only a meager N2 million was spent directly on the welfare of the internally displaced persons. You are a fantastically corrupt politician whose legacy is permanently tied to the cruel diversion of humanitarian relief. When you arrogantly asked, "Who is the presidency?" during your suspension, you demonstrated a culture of impunity that Nigerian youths have completely outgrown.

History will judge political actors not by the bitterness of their exit notes, but by their consistency, integrity, and commitment to national integration. On this score, Babachir David Lawal, you are a historical deficit. You hold no votes, you control no structures, and you command no respect. Go back to your farm and face the weeds. The ADC National Youth Wing has moved past your era of transactional greed, and we have permanently committed your empty political shell to the dustbin of history.

A Clarion Call to the Millions of Nigerian Youth

To the millions of resilient, forward-thinking young Nigerians watching this unfolding drama, this is our defining moment to rise above the ruins of past mistakes.

We must resolutely shun the toxic, archaic politics of religious bigotry, ethnic manipulation, and sectional division. For too long, spent political forces have weaponized our differences, turning brother against brother just to advance their personal comfort and feed their insatiable greed. They use us as political foot soldiers during elections, only to retreat to their luxurious village farms and estates while we inherit the bitter harvest of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

Refuse to be used by those who lack a vision for the future. Our primary allegiance must be to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, not to the narrow biases of self-serving elites.

Let us build a nation based on competence, character, and shared prosperity. Our generation must break the chains of identity politics and pioneer a new era of issue-based engagement. Together, we hold the power to shape a unified, prosperous Nigeria that works for all, regardless of tribe, tongue, or faith.

Yours-in-the-Struggle,

Balarabe Rufai
