STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU ARRIVES ROME

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Rome, Italy, on Saturday to join other world leaders at the solemn mass marking the beginning of the Pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome and the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The installation mass will take place on Sunday, May 18.

President Tinubu was received at the Mario De Bernardo Military Airport by Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and officials from Vatican City and the Nigerian Embassy after the plane touched down at 6 pm local time.

President Tinubu is in Rome to honour the new Pope’s invitation, conveyed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State.

The Papal invitation underscored the need for President Tinubu’s physical presence “at this moment of particular importance for the Catholic Church and the world afflicted by many tensions and conflicts.”

“Your great nation is particularly dear to me as I worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos during the 1980s,” Pope Leo XIV further said in the invitation.

President Tinubu’s entourage includes the Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, and Alfred Martins of Lagos.

Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, is also in the president’s entourage.

Tinubu Links National Security to Economic Growth, Vows Technological Overhaul

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering resolve to reclaim ungoverned spaces across Nigeria, with a specific focus on the forested areas of the North West. Speaking at a state dinner with Katsina State leaders, he emphasized the deployment of cutting-edge surveillance technologies as a strategic move to combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings.

Tinubu acknowledged the country’s security challenges, stating that they pose a significant barrier to investment. “Security is not just a regional or local issue—it’s a national concern,” he said. “Investment is cautious; it avoids instability. We must secure our nation to attract meaningful economic engagement.”

He assured attendees that Nigeria’s armed forces are receiving support to take back the forests and address insecurity collaboratively with state and local authorities.

Atiku’s 2027 Ambition Fueling PDP Crisis, Say Party Chieftains

Some prominent figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed concerns over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s continued presidential ambition, stating it is a major catalyst for the deepening divisions within the party.

According to Naija News, a member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), who requested anonymity, criticized Atiku for what they described as a lack of meaningful contribution to the PDP’s development, alleging that his personal political pursuits have often hindered party cohesion.

The source recalled that Atiku had previously led a group of five PDP governors out of the party without causing its collapse, and suggested that his rumored 2027 presidential bid is exacerbating internal rifts. The official also referenced a recent statement made by Atiku in response to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s defection, interpreting it as a possible indication that Atiku himself might be considering leaving the PDP.

NOA Reaffirms Support for Operation Safe Corridor’s Deradicalisation Efforts

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has voiced its strong backing for the Federal Government’s Operation Safe Corridor (OSC), which focuses on the deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of former Boko Haram combatants into Nigerian society. This commitment was reaffirmed during a recent visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja by Brigadier-General Yusuf Ali, the Coordinator of OSC, and his team.

NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, welcomed the OSC delegation and acknowledged that public misunderstandings about the programme remain a significant hurdle. Issa-Onilu admitted that while he initially had reservations about the initiative due to limited information, he now appreciates its vital role in fostering peace and securing national stability.

Issa-Onilu highlighted that many individuals undergoing rehabilitation were not ideologically motivated insurgents but victims of abduction, coercion, or deception during Boko Haram’s reign of terror in Nigeria’s northeast. He stressed the importance of community and institutional support to ensure successful reintegration, warning that failure to embrace reformed individuals could lead to re-radicalisation.
