Australia and South Africa came together in The Hague for a co-hosted event – Shared Sky – exploring how the SKA Observatory is bringing countries together to look deeper into our universe 🔭🌏

With telescope sites in Australia and South Africa, the SKA Observatory brings together governments, scientists and specialists from around the world to tackle some of the biggest questions about our universe.

We heard from keynote speaker Professor Jessica Dempsey, Director-General of the SKA Observatory and Australian radio astronomer, on the ambitions of the SKAO and the international cooperation behind it.

The afternoon also featured a digital display of Cosmic Echoes, an Indigenous art exhibition bringing together Wajarri Yamaji artists from Western Australia and Khoi-San artists from South Africa, two communities with thousands of years of knowledge and connection to the night sky

From the mysteries of the universe to the partnerships that make discovery possible, it was a fascinating afternoon of science, curiosity and diplomacy.

We celebrated ADE last week with plenty of Australian talent and international connections 🇦🇺🎶

Did you know? 🌏 Electronic music accounts for 45% of Australian music streamed overseas. That global reach was on full display in Amsterdam, with more than 60 Australian artists performing across ADE. We also joined Sounds Australia for two industry breakfasts, connecting Australian artists and industry leaders with counterparts from Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Congratulations to Museum Batavialand on successfully bringing the reconstruction of the VOC ship Batavia on land. This will ensure its preservation for future generations. The shipwreck of the Batavia in June 1629 off the coast of Western Australia was a special moment in Australian history, marking the first European settlement in Australia, be it temporary and unplanned. Deputy Head of Mission, Kevin Playford, was delighted to attend the Batavia ann Land celebrations in Lelystad, Flevoland. 📸 Jaap Roskam (1)

How do we uphold and strengthen the global norm against chemical weapons use?

Attributing responsibility and identifying perpetrators is one critical way to achieve this.

Australia and Germany were pleased to co-host a seminar examining the role of the Chemical Weapons Convention in identifying perpetrators of chemical weapons use and supporting the international community's collective response to violations of the Convention.

Bringing together experts in international law, diplomacy, science, and accountability mechanisms, the discussion explored the legal foundations of the OPCW's attribution work, lessons learned from investigations in practice, and how technical expertise can assist States Parties in responding to future chemical weapons incidents.

The event highlighted the importance of credible investigations, robust evidence, and international cooperation in preserving confidence in the Chemical Weapons Convention and defending the longstanding prohibition on chemical weapons.

Thank you to our co-hosts, panellists, and guests for an engaging and thoughtful discussion on this important issue.
