The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority – Regional Office XIII (PhilFIDA RO XIII) successfully conducted the training “Enhancing the Capability of Selected Farmer Organizations on the Operation and Maintenance of Abaca Spindle Stripping Machine” on September 28–29, 2026, at Kaliguan Resort, Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.
The two-day activity aimed to strengthen the knowledge and technical skills of selected abaca farmer organizations in harvesting and post-harvest handling, abaca quality standards, and the safe operation and maintenance of the Abaca Spindle Stripping Machine.
The activity was led by Regional Director Samuel M. Nacino, Jr., together with Regulatory Unit Head Alfritz L. Ceballos, Psymie Madel F. Ceballos, TAU Head Phoebe Grace C. Colonia, Rene D. Ibarra, Jr., Joel M. Portigo, Vincent Paul M. Ngilangil, Kenneth B. Trio, and MIS personnel Joven Charles A. Panganiban.
On the first day, PhilFIDA focal persons assigned to different municipalities were introduced to the participants as points of contact for future technical assistance and abaca-related concerns. Mr. Ceballos then led a discussion on Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling of Abaca, covering proper production practices, the Philippine National Standards on abaca grading, factors affecting fiber quality, and appropriate grading and handling practices.
The second day focused on the actual operation and maintenance of the spindle stripping machine. Regional Director Nacino thanked the farmers for their participation and emphasized the importance of proper production standards, safe machine operation, and regular maintenance in producing quality abaca fiber.
The machine demonstration was facilitated by Ms. Rosemarie Palacios, representative of the supplier, together with the supplier’s operational personnel. They discussed the machine’s components, replacement parts, maintenance requirements, safety precautions, and correct machine adjustment and configuration.
Participants then took part in a hands-on demonstration of the tuxying process and spindle stripping operation. They were guided on the proper feeding, positioning, winding, and pulling of abaca materials through the machine, while observing essential safety precautions.
The activity concluded with an open discussion where participants shared their observations, challenges, and questions, followed by closing remarks from Regional Director Nacino. He reaffirmed PhilFIDA RO XIII’s commitment to supporting abaca farmers through technical assistance, capability-building activities, and future programs aimed at improving productivity and strengthening the abaca industry.
