𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: In line with the celebration of the 125th Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Founding Anniversary, with the theme, “One Sea, One Mission, One Legacy: 125 Years of Guarding the Nation’s Maritime Future,” and the 27th National Maritime Week, with the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” the Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte (CGS SDN), under the leadership of Station Commander Lieutenant Junior Grade Roy Christopher R. Orillaneda PCG, successfully conducted a Static Display, Anti-Drowning Awareness Campaign and Basic Life Support (BLS) Orientation at Surigao Education Center (SEC), Brgy. Luna, Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, today, 24 September 2026.

The activity was actively participated in by the Operational Control (OPCON) Units of Coast Guard District Northeastern Mindanao (CGDNEM), which showcased their respective capabilities, equipment, assets, and resources through a static display. The activity provided students with an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and a deeper appreciation of the various roles and responsibilities of the Philippine Coast Guard in maritime safety, maritime security, law enforcement, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, and community service.

Complementing the static display were the Anti-Drowning Awareness Campaign and Basic Life Support (BLS) Orientation, which aimed to strengthen the students’ awareness and understanding of water safety, drowning prevention, emergency response, and basic life support. The BLS Orientation provided students with essential knowledge on how to appropriately respond to emergencies and provide immediate assistance while awaiting professional medical responders.

Through information sharing, demonstrations, and safety discussions, students were reminded of the importance of practicing proper safety measures whenever they are in, near, or around aquatic environments. The campaign emphasized essential water-safety practices, including avoiding swimming in unsafe or unfamiliar areas, monitoring weather and sea conditions, using appropriate personal flotation devices when necessary, never swimming alone, observing safety signs and instructions, and immediately seeking assistance during emergencies.

The activity also encouraged students to become responsible advocates for water safety by sharing these life-saving practices with their families, friends, and communities. By equipping the youth with basic knowledge of drowning prevention and BLS, the initiative sought to develop greater preparedness and confidence in responding to water-related emergencies.

Beyond showcasing the capabilities of PCG units, the activity served as an avenue to bring the PCG’s maritime safety mission closer to the youth and the community. It underscored the importance of equipping the younger generation with knowledge, awareness, and practical skills that can help prevent maritime and water-related accidents and ultimately save lives.

Furthermore, the initiative supported the Intensified Community Awareness, Assistance, Response and Enforcement (iCARE) Program of the Philippine Coast Guard, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility and active community participation in promoting maritime safety, water safety, drowning prevention, and emergency preparedness.

Through this initiative, PCG-CGS SDN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a culture of maritime safety, preparedness, responsibility, and vigilance, while strengthening partnerships with educational institutions and communities toward a safer maritime environment.
