Canan NHS posts an 18-gold haul in arnis, with nine athletes qualifying for the Division Meet after competing in 22 events at the Municipal Meet held October 15 at Malasiqui National High School.
In the individual events, Charls Kenneth Lucero leads the medal haul with gold in single weapon, double weapon, and espada y daga. Rodalyn Tamayo adds gold in single weapon and espada y daga, while Shane Tantay takes the top spot in double weapon.
The synchronized trio teams strengthen Canan’s performance, sweeping gold across all three weapon categories. Tamayo, Tantay, and Kim Ashley Malonzo top the girls’ single weapon, double weapon, and espada y daga events. The boys’ trio of Clarence Dave Irangan, John Rey Bocaloy, and Jazz Andrie Bucaloy delivers the same result, winning gold in all three categories.
For the girls’ team, the competition marks a comeback after Canan NHS had no female arnis entries in the previous school year. This year, the girls return to the competition with gold-medal finishes in synchronized trio and individual events, along with podium placements in combat, signaling their return to the arnis scene.
In boys’ combat, Clarence Dave Irangan takes gold in pinweight, John Rey Bocaloy in bantamweight, and Jazz Andrie Bucaloy in featherweight. Charls Kenneth Lucero also claims gold in half lightweight after advancing through the opening round with a bye and winning his final bout. A Regional I Athletic Association (R1AA) qualifier in the previous school year, he earns another opportunity to compete at the next level. Jed Montemayor adds a silver medal in extra lightweight.
The girls’ combat team contributes two more gold medals through Althea Rowenn Bucaloy in bantamweight and Jane Ashly Zapanta in featherweight. Rodalyn Tamayo earns bronze in pinweight, Shane Tantay in extra lightweight, and Kim Ashley Malonzo in half lightweight.
With nine athletes securing spots in the Division Meet, Canan NHS now sets its sights on a tougher field of competitors. Backed by their performance in the recent competition, the arnisadors carry their momentum forward, ready to take on the next challenge and represent Canan on the division stage.
Behind every medal earned are the people who train, guide, and support the athletes. Canan NHS extends its sincere appreciation to coaches:
