Let's talk about mood disorders 🗣️

Rebecca, Senior Manager of Rehabilitation Services at Anglican Care Centre (Simei), was invited to share her insights at the "Ask Me Anything" workshop on mood disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. The 2-hour workshop was packed with deep sharing by persons with lived experience, as well as useful information by mental health professionals. They shared candidly about early signs of mood disorders such as insomnia, how to encourage persons to seek help, struggles with medication, and the multiple, non-medical dimensions of recovery. A common thread that emerged from the open dialogue was the importance of community. Anglican Care Centre (Hougang) also held a booth with craft items handmade by clients as part of their rehabilitation programme.

We thank the Say Know initiative and the The Foundry for organising and hosting the workshop, as well as fellow panelists and partners like Mindfull Community Singapore and The Tapestry Project SG. As societal awareness of mental health grows, such platforms help build a "no shame" culture, where people can share their experiences and questions freely.

Apart from working with clients with mental health conditions, Rebecca also conducts training such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (W.R.A.P) to equip mental healthcare workers with practical tools. This Mother’s Day, we honour the sacrificial love and hard work of mothers like Lynn. 🌹

When Lynn's family fell into financial hardship, she found a way to earn supplementary income through our Mother and Child Project, sewing crafts, bag, clothes and more. "I didn't know how to sew at all. They patiently taught me how to use a sewing machine. I still remember when I got the first cash payment. I was very happy; finally I made it! Now I have confidence that I can use my hands to work and help the family," says Lynn.

Mother and Child Project is a social enterprise under SACS that aims to help disadvantaged mothers become economically self-sufficient through innovative product creation using upcycled materials.

Indeed, many of our clients and beneficiaries inspire us with their strength and love for their families that stays constant even through the hard times. We wish all mothers a Happy Mother's Day, good health and joy! 🥰

Building capabilities for a stronger future 💪

We are proud to celebrate 24 colleagues from SACS, St. Andrew's Community Hospital and St. Andrew's Nursing Home who received the Community Care Manpower Development Award from Ms Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State for Health, and Digital Development and Information, this afternoon.

Truly, lifelong learning and capability building are key to staying future-ready as the community care sector evolves. We are excited about our colleagues’ professional growth and continued contributions in caring for patients, seniors, and persons with mental health challenges.

Thank you Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore for the opportunities!

Thankful to The Woke Salaryman for shining the spotlight on the challenges persons with autism and their families may face in public spaces. Indeed, a little grace and kindness go a long way in helping them feel accepted and included. As St. Andrew's Autism Centre puts it, "As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, the conversation should not end here. Autism is lifelong, and our understanding, acceptance and care should be too". 💙
