Buying an extinguisher for battery risks? Look for battery-fire test evidence, not just a familiar red cylinder.

Your kitchen extinguisher should be rated for cooking-oil fires.

Look for a Class F rating. The COMBAT 3L water-mist extinguisher is rated 40F and uses water with additives in purpose-designed equipment. That is not the same as pouring ordinary water onto burning oil.

Never pour water into burning oil or carry a burning pan. For a small pan fire, cover it with a suitable lid and turn off the heat only if safe. If the fire is spreading or you cannot act safely, leave and call 995.

Five publicly reported fires feature in our Singapore recap for 19-25 October:

🔥19 Oct, Mei Ling Street: items outside a 10th-floor flat caught fire. Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation; about 25 were evacuated as a precaution.

🔥20 Oct, Bedok Reservoir: a rubbish truck's contents caught fire. No injuries were reported.

🔥20 Oct, Yishun Street 42: residents used a hose reel to extinguish a kitchen fire before firefighters arrived. Four people were assessed for minor injuries and declined hospital conveyance.

🔥22 Oct, Bukit Batok West Avenue 8: a kitchen-area fire was extinguished before SCDF arrived. No injuries were reported.

🔥22 Oct, Margaret Drive: a tree branch near the hawker centre caught fire. No injuries were reported.

The reported causes remain under investigation. These are selected public reports, not SCDF's complete incident log.

⚠️Only consider tackling a small fire if it is safe and you have a clear escape route.
⚠️Never use hose-reel water on burning cooking oil or live electrical equipment.

The common corridor is someone's way out, and the firefighters' way in.

SCDF requires at least 1.2m of clear escape passage where permitted shoe racks or foldable clothing racks are placed along common corridors. If the corridor is narrower than 1.2m, no objects should be placed there.

That clearance isn't permission to store everything else outside. Keep access to doors, hose reels and risers clear, and follow your estate's rules.

Take a look outside your door this weekend. Move anything narrowing the escape passage back into your home.
