As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common on Singapore's roads, so do the challenges of managing EV-related fires.

Kudos to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for introducing its new Vehicle Extrication Robot (VXR)!

Designed to enhance firefighter safety, the VXR can be remotely operated from up to 300 metres away to move fire-affected EVs to safer locations after the flames are extinguished.

It also features an integrated water mist system to protect the robot from radiant heat during operations.

Why does this matter?

Unlike conventional vehicle fires, EV battery fires present unique challenges, including thermal runaway and the risk of re-ignition even after the initial fire has been extinguished.

At King Fire, we believe that as technology evolves, fire protection and emergency response capabilities must evolve alongside it.

It's encouraging to see SCDF embracing innovation to tackle emerging fire risks while keeping our frontline responders safer.

It might seem harmless, but charging your phone on a bed or pillow could be a fire hazard!

In Episode 4 of Captain K-Fire, our little fire safety hero is back with another important reminder!

Beds, pillows and blankets can trap heat, increasing the risk of your phone overheating while charging.

The safer habit? Charge your phone on a firm, flat surface with good airflow, away from bedding and other flammable materials.

A fire doesn't have to reach your home for you to be in danger.

A fire broke out at Block 158 Mei Ling Street in Queenstown on 19 October, involving items placed outside a 10th-floor unit.

Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, while about 25 others were evacuated as a precaution.

The incident reminds us that smoke can spread beyond the immediate fire area, putting neighbouring residents at risk.

A few important fire safety reminders:

✅ Keep corridors, common areas and escape routes clear of clutter and combustible items.

✅ Avoid storing flammable materials outside your home.

✅ If you encounter smoke during a fire, stay low and avoid breathing it in.

✅ Never enter a smoke-filled staircase or corridor. If your escape route is unsafe, stay in a safe location, close the door and call 995 for help.

Our thoughts are with the affected residents, and we wish those hospitalised a speedy recovery.

We also commend the SCDF and police officers for their swift response in bringing the situation under control.

Fire safety is a shared responsibility. Keeping common spaces safe can help protect not just your household, but your neighbours too.

A fire can start in seconds, but its impact can last much longer.

A fire believed to have originated from a Personal Mobility Aid (PMA) broke out at the third-floor staircase landing of Block 438 Yishun Avenue 11 on 18 October.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and SCDF extinguished the fire quickly.

However, the aftermath left extensive scorch marks and damage to the common area, disrupted the electricity supply to nearby units, and forced more than 50 residents to evacuate.

A timely reminder that PMA and battery fire safety should never be overlooked.

✅ Use only original, manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers.

✅ Avoid overcharging or leaving devices charging overnight.

✅ Never charge or store PMAs along escape routes, staircases or common corridors.

✅ Stop using batteries that show signs of swelling, overheating or damage.

✅ Keep common areas and evacuation routes clear at all times.

Fire safety doesn't stop at our front doors. It is a shared responsibility that protects our families, neighbours and communities.
