250,000 steps. 25 years. One community.
Stepping Miles, Inspiring Love, Embracing Smiles — that's the spirit driving us as we celebrate this milestone at Viriya Community Services (VCS).
For 25 years, we have walked alongside our community — delivering family services, mental health support, counselling services, and caregiver support.
With every step forward, we meet a need. Another counselling session secured. Another caregiver supported. Another family lifted.
Sponsor our walk — donation drive runs until 18 June 2026. Donations of $50 and above qualify for up to 2.5x tax deduction, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Tote Board.

The healthy precinct in Boon Lay & West Coast is growing, and we are proud to be part of it by running HAPPY exercise sites and partnering with NUH RHSO to tackle social isolation, among other efforts.
As a member of the NUHS Boon Lay Workgroup, our Head of Community Health and Mental Health, Mr Tan Zhiwei, puts it best: this is a collective mandate — to embed wellness into daily life, and to shift partnerships from coordination to true integration.

A Million Steps, One Shared Purpose
When we started this one-week campaign from 25 April to 01 May 2026, we set a target of 600,000 steps. We are delighted to share that our team has more than doubled that goal, clocking in a staggering 1,248,381 steps in a week and raising more than $10,000!
Every single one of those million steps was fueled by a single purpose: walking in solidarity with the families we serve.
While the campaign week has come to an end, our walk alongside our families never stops. This incredible milestone is a testament to what happens when we walk as one community. Your cheers, your support, and your donations have turned a walking campaign into a movement of hope, strength and resilience.
Thank you for being the strength in our stride. Our campaign page remains open for contributions, and you can help us reach our fundraising goals for the families.

Remembering Dr Gilbert Fan
1959–2026
President, Viriya Community Services (2021-2026)
Gilbert lived his life with a rare combination of steadiness and tenderness. He never needed to be the loudest voice in the room; yet somehow, he always became its calm centre. People gravitated toward him not because he demanded attention, but because he offered presence - grounded, and deeply humane.
As a senior master medical social worker, educator, and internationally respected leader in oncology social work, Gilbert shaped generations of practitioners in Singapore and beyond. The Straits Times 01 April 2026 (https://str.sg/4su6j) described him as “a pillar of strength and wisdom whose contributions to the social work profession in Singapore were profound and enduring.” He advanced the fields of palliative care and bereavement, and he played a pivotal role in building Singapore’s national social work accreditation framework.
But to us at VCS, Gilbert was more than an expert practitioner. He was generosity personified.
Gilbert led VCS' transformation journey in 2021, conceptualising VCS' Social and Community Services Model that provided guidance and direction to promote a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary practice culture. He shared his knowledge freely, his wisdom patiently, and his time without hesitation. From the day he joined VCS, he never said no when someone sought his help. He showed up - wholeheartedly and without fanfare. He taught us, by example, that compassion is not a technique but a way of being. Many of us were shaped by Gilbert in ways he never boasted about. He supported without expecting anything in return. He guided without seeking recognition. He lifted others, often without them even realising it.
Even toward the end of his journey, he made arrangements to minimise trouble to others. He continued helping cancer patients while keeping his own diagnosis private. His instinct was always to protect, to care, to serve.
As we honour his life, we return to one of his favourite teachings on 四道人生 - the Four Most Important Tasks:
道谢 - To Give Thanks
Thank you, Gilbert - our mentor, our president, our friend - for the compassion you lived out so naturally, for the wisdom you shared so generously, and for the way you lifted others simply by being yourself.
道歉 - To Apologise
We are sorry for the moments we took for granted, for the conversations we thought we would still have time for, and for the ways we may have fallen short. This is our human way of saying: you mattered more than we ever fully expressed.
道爱 - To Express Love
We love your gentleness, your humour, and the dignity with which you treated every person. We love the way you made the world kinder just by being in it.
道别 - To Say Goodbye
Gilbert, goodbye. We let you go with gratitude, and with the promise that your light continues in the lives you touched. Your legacy remains safe with us. We will carry your light forward.
His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. But his legacy - of service, of humility, of unwavering kindness - will continue to guide us at VCS and across the social work community.
You gave so much, Gilbert.
We are all better because of you.
Rest well, our dear friend.
