Ferguson Outdoor Learning Center Connecting more than one million students and families to the wonders of nature since 1954.

The Alice Ferguson Foundation operates three core programs:

Each year, thousands of children from the Washington, DC metropolitan area experience environmental and agricultural hands-on learning through field studies at the Foundation's 330-acre Hard Bargain Farm. As 45% of these students are from underserved, at-risk communities, this is often their first nature experience. This initial encounter with nature profoundly affects students as well as the impact they can have on our environment and natural resources. "Green shock" is the astonished look on a child's face when he or she touches a real live cow or chicken for the first time. Within hours, that look softens into appreciation, wonder, and excitement! In partnership with the National Park Service and area schools, our Bridging The Watershed program provides personally meaningful, educational experiences that connect students to their role in the natural and cultural world. Each year, thousands of students from the Washington, DC region visit local national parks with their science classes as part of this program. These trips provide an authentic experience for students that allow them to take measurements and make field observations-just like a scientist. Since 1989, more than 90,000 volunteers have teamed with 400 partner organizations to haul more than 3 million tons of trash from the watershed during the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. The success of the Cleanup led to the creation of the Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative in 2005. The Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative focuses on trash disposal and provides a forum for active citizenship-catalyzing a diverse network of citizens, businesses, and elected officials to achieve the Initiative's objectives.

Oh, the stories 72 years could tell! 🌿

Some things never get old, like the excitement of dipping a net into the water and discovering what lives beneath the surface!

These photos may have been taken years apart, but the sense of wonder is just the same. Since 1954, generations of students, families, and community members have explored, learned, and made memories with us.

This birthday is especially meaningful as we celebrate our first under the name Ferguson Outdoor Learning Center!

Happy Birthday to us! 🎉 We're so grateful for everyone who has helped make these 72 years so special. We can't wait to see what comes next!

Have a favorite memory with us? We'd love to hear it! 💚

There's a lot more to photography than getting the perfect shot! 📸

For our summer intern Devonte, it meant getting to know our campers, sharing in their excitement, and seeing firsthand the impact of our outdoor education programs.

We're looking back on his summer with us, the moments that stuck with him, and the memories he helped capture along the way. 🌿

Read his story in our latest blog! https://www.fergusonfoundation.org/behind-the-lens-a-summer-with-devonte/

Still smiling after Celebration on the Potomac! 💚

What a wonderful evening spent celebrating with friends, supporters, partners, and members of our community.

Guests enjoyed local food and drinks, explored art and history, and came together in support of the Ferguson Outdoor Learning Center and the experiences we’re creating for children, families, and our community.

The weather may have kept us on our toes, but it certainly didn’t stop us from having a great time!

Thank you to everyone who made the evening so special. Here are a few moments captured by Mike Buscher Photography.
