In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), Judge Kathryn Michael's Domestic Violence Intervention Court (DVIC) hosted a Brown Bag Lunch and Learn on yesterday to provide education and increase awareness about issues impacting survivors of domestic violence.
Guest speaker Katie Howell, of the Hope & Healing Survivor Resource Center, provided an informative presentation focused on the important distinction between no contact orders and protection orders. Howell educated court staff on how these legal tools differ in purpose, scope, and enforcement, while highlighting gaps that can leave survivors vulnerable.
Howell touched on just a few of the many gaps surrounding no contact orders and criminal protection orders and how these gaps can create barriers for survivors seeking safety and stability. Court staff learned about the practical implications of these differences and the ways in which these gaps may affect survivors' experiences within the legal system.
DVAM reminds us of the importance of education, collaboration, and ongoing advocacy. By learning from community partners, such as the Hope and Healing Survivor Resource Center, we can better understand the realities faced by survivors and continue working toward a more informed and supportive response.
Through events such as these, DVIC remains committed to raising awareness, promoting education, and strengthening partnerships that support the safety and wellbeing of survivors throughout Summit County.
