Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site Welcome to the official page of Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site. Located in Albany, NY, the site was home to Philip J.
(214)

Schuyler, the Revolutionary War Major General, US Senator, agrarian, and businessman. Located in Albany, NY, Schuyler Mansion was home to Philip J. He and his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, descended from affluent and powerful Dutch families. Together they raised eight children in this home. The home was built in a Georgian style, reflecting Schuyler's English tastes, on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Originally situated on an 80-acre tract of land, the grounds once included an orchard, formal gardens, and a working farm. Throughout the Schuyler family occupancy from 1763-1804, the mansion was the site of military strategizing, political hobnobbing, elegant social affairs, and an active family life. It was also home to more than fifty enslaved laborers, servants, and artisans over that span. From mid-May through October, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the mansion, as well as an orientation exhibition in the Visitor Center focusing on the 18th century history of the site and its inhabitants. Temporary exhibitions and public programs are scheduled year-round. Tours for school and adult groups, as well as outreach programs, are also available. All tours, public and private, are by reservation. Please call (518) 434-0834 to make a reservation.

On this day, 109 years ago, Schuyler Mansion first opened as a museum. Prior to this, the mansion had been occupied by St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum Society. After outgrowing the mansion space for their orphanage, New York State purchased the property, beginning restoration in 1914. By 1917, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site would be open to the public.

This day was chosen as it marked the 140th anniversary of the British surrender at Saratoga, a campaign that Major General Philip Schuyler was instrumental in the planning and ultimate success of.

On this day in 1777, Philip Schuyler’s military secretary Richard Varick wrote to him regarding the state of Schuyler’s Saratoga property following the Battles of Saratoga.

“I am sorry to inform that no Forrage is left
on Guiles’s Farm nor any Turnips or Potatoes
on Yours or His.
The Wood Work of the Ploughs is at present
inacceptable Even if not destroyed, Which
I think is indebatable.
There still remains good Grass in Your
Mowing Ground South of the patch of H**p
which still stands, but the Horses & Cattle
which are necessarily on It, will soon consume the
Whole…”

Schuyler’s Saratoga property suffered a significant amount of damage during the battle, including the burning of the family’s home.
