END THE STREAK

There hasn't been a deathless day on Texas roadways since Nov. 7, 2000. We can do small things each and every day that can help bring this streak to a screeching halt. Today, members of local law enforcement, first-responding agencies, and impaired driving prevention groups were in attendance to talk about the importance of practicing safe-driving measures to prevent senseless tragedies from happening on our roadways.

Let's all do our part and .

WALKING BILLBOARD SAFETY CAMPAIGN TAKES AMARILLO! 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

The TxDOT pedestrian safety team took to the streets of downtown Amarillo on Thursday to spread simple and direct safety messages to the traveling public.

PEDESTRIANS: Make yourself visible and only use crosswalks!

DRIVERS: Pay attention, slow down, and always be on the lookout for pedestrians!

This team effort by both drivers and pedestrians can make our roadways safer for everyone 🙂.

More people are commuting in the dark. It can be hard to spot pedestrians. Always stay alert, keep your eyes on the road and watch out for people on foot!

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY STREET TEAM TO VISIT AMARILLO
12 pedestrians were killed in the Amarillo area in 2025
____________________________
Oct. 27, 2026

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

WHERE: Area surrounding Amarillo Civic Center Complex

PURPOSE: Be Safe. Drive Smart. street teams of “walking billboards” will display key safety messages for drivers and pedestrians. TxDOT is targeting areas with high pedestrian activity or previously reported pedestrian crashes.

AMARILLO – Reduced daylight hours in the fall and winter mean more people commute in the dark, which can put people walking at risk.

In fact, last year 68% of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries occurred at night.

That’s why the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is traveling the state and drawing attention to lifesaving tips for drivers and pedestrians.

Street teams with walking billboards will display key safety messages in high-traffic areas in Amarillo and across Texas. Last year, 694 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in Texas, and 12 of those fatalities occurred in the counties surrounding Amarillo.

Be Safe. Drive Smart. is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe. We know not everybody is used to roundabouts, but they can have so many benefits. Here are a couple facts to wrap up
▶️ Large trucks can use them too
▶️ They can actually reduce traffic delays
▶️ Slower speeds mean they're safer for pedestrians and cyclists too

A lot of clever design goes into building roundabouts. After one turned people's negative assumptions to a positive reception, local engineers are building a new roundabout outside of Hallettsville. Why? To prevent crashes at the intersection of two highways.
