Engineering Meets Fire: Putting Student Designs to the Test 🔥🏠

Apex Fire partnered with Apex Friendship High School’s Academy of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing for a morning of hands-on learning and plenty of fun!

Students worked in teams to research fire-resistant materials and build two-story model homes, each with a 1-foot-by-1-foot footprint. Then came the test: AFD assisted with controlled burns of three models at a time so students could observe how their designs and materials performed.

Needless to say, we were impressed! Their creativity, teamwork, and thoughtful designs made this a memorable experience for our firefighters and staff.

Thank you to Apex Friendship High School for welcoming us, and a special shoutout to Mr. Stapleton for leading the project. We loved helping bring this lesson to life!

As temperatures drop and winter weather moves in, you may be turning to alternative ways to heat or power your home this season. But did you know these sources can come with serious safety risks?

Portable generators and fuel-burning heating equipment can produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly. Knowing how to use these devices safely can save lives!

A few tips to keep in mind:
- Using a space heater to stay warm this season? Make sure to keep them three feet away from anything that can burn!
- Always operate portable generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use one inside your home or garage, even with the door open.
- Keep generator exhaust directed away from your home to prevent dangerous fumes from entering.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home and be sure to change the batteries every six months to a year!

You don’t need anything fancy, basic CO alarms are available at your local home improvement store and can provide lifesaving protection when properly installed and maintained.

⚠️ Apex families, be cautious of misleading marketing for “low-level” CO alarms. Some materials target families with young children, claim to offer a firefighter’s perspective, and use frightening stories to pressure readers into buying a specific product.

There was a lot of excitement in the kindergarten hallway on Friday for our visit from the Apex Fire Department. Our kindergarten students practiced an important fire safety skill: “stay low and go!” Thank you to our kindergarten team for organizing this opportunity to help students learn how to stay safe.

Dear parents,

Thank you for trusting us with your kiddos. ❤️

Thank you for letting us show them what a firefighter looks and sounds like in full gear, so they know to come toward us for help instead of hiding. Thank you for letting us teach them to get low and go if there’s smoke, and to get outside and stay outside when a smoke alarm sounds.

We hope they never need those lessons. But if they do, we want them to have every chance possible. Our commitment to protecting them starts long before an emergency.

We’re teaching them what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Here’s where we need your help: making sure there’s a working alarm to warn them.

🚨 Check the date. Find the manufacturing date on the back of each smoke alarm and add 10 years. If that date has arrived or passed, replace the entire alarm.

🚨 Test monthly. Press the test button on each alarm and make sure it sounds.

Last Friday, we celebrated the retirement of another dedicated public servant, Jeremy Holland!

We extend our sincere gratitude to Jeremy for his years of service, commitment, and contributions to AFD and the Apex community. We wish him all the best in this exciting next chapter!

Apex Fire responded around 8 p.m. to a structure fire in the 100 block of Darley Dale Loop. The fire has been contained, and crews remain on scene.

Responding units include WC1, AFCAR1, AFCAR2, LAD34, LAD35, E31, E34, E35, E36, BAT5, BAT6 and RES33.

Please avoid the area to allow emergency crews room to work. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
