The Augusta Canal is one of those places where the city's history is not behind glass—it is still moving beside you.

The canal was built in 1845 to power Augusta's growing industry, and remarkably, it still serves that original purpose today. Mills, old industrial sites, and historic homes remain part of the landscape, creating a route where infrastructure and memory sit side by side.

Visitors can follow the former towpath on foot or by bicycle, paddle the calm water by kayak or canoe, or board a Petersburg boat while a captain shares stories of cargo, cotton, and daily life along the canal. The Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill deepens the story, while wildlife adds its own surprises along the banks. It is history you can move through rather than simply read about.

Augusta Canal Secures Additional $750,000 Federal Grant for Historic Mother Trinity CME Church, Bringing Project Total to $2.25M

AUGUSTA, GA — The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is pleased to announce it has been awarded another $750,000 federal grant administered by the National Park Service (an agency under the U.S. Department of the Interior) to initiate the vital preservation and restoration of the Mother Trinity CME Church located in downtown Augusta. This latest funding milestone brings the total to $2.25 million in grants that the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area has successfully secured toward this crucial historic preservation project.

Funded through the highly competitive African American Civil Rights Grant program, this significant allocation supports the critical initial phases of saving the 132-year-old landmark. The historic red-brick, Gothic-style sanctuary is recognized across the state as the symbolic birthplace of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) denomination in Georgia.
To protect the structural integrity of the vacant building after past environmental factors impacted its foundation, the structure was physically moved 250 feet across the street in 2018. The multi-million-dollar grant pool provides the exact resources needed to halt ongoing deterioration, stabilize the building envelope, restoration, and design a long-term roadmap for its future.

"Preserving the physical spaces that define our region's rich, multifaceted history is essential to our mission," said Brian Graham, Senior Director of the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area (ACNHA). "Historic preservation within the National Heritage Area is one of our organization’s core pillars. By stepping forward to steward the restoration of the Mother Trinity CME Church, we are not just saving an architectural treasure; we are honoring a profound legacy of civil rights and community resilience right here in the heart of Augusta."
