The Beachwood Police Department continues to participate with local Ocean County law enforcement agencies in a Goal:Zero statewide high-visibility, countywide traffic enforcement detail to address the staggering rise in traffic deaths in New Jersey. As of October 5, 2026, 399 people have lost their lives on New Jersey roadways - and 31 of those deaths occurred in Ocean County.

This month’s detail is dedicated to the memory of Kimberly Smith Ames. This is one that hits close to home. Kimberly was a Beachwood native, a 23-year-old newlywed, and three months pregnant with her first child when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver on October 7, 1998, in Beachwood. In the aftermath of her tragic death, Kimberly’s photo became the hallmark in a statewide DWI awareness campaign featuring billboards and signs posted in local stores. In 2020, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office - in collaboration with the Ocean County Traffic Safety Officer’s Association and the Smith family - reintroduced the billboards that are placed throughout Ocean County. The detail reinforces the message that driving impaired will not be tolerated. We will continue to work to get dangerous drivers off our roads and hold those that drive impaired accountable.

Holmdel Township Patrolman Matt Menosky was the catalyst behind the 2024 Goal:Zero campaign, which brought together 36 municipalities to target dangerous driving behaviors. The bright green color of the Goal:Zero logo represents high visibility and is the color for pedestrian and school safety. The black bar is a mourning band for all the lives lost in traffic crashes.

Throughout October, officers of the Beachwood Police Department will wear pink badges in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These badges recognize those affected, including survivors, those in treatment, and the families and friends who stand with them. We also honor the memory of those we’ve lost.
