The Beaver Area Heritage Foundation - is moving forward with an ambitious project that will bring a vintage railroad caboose to the Beaver Area Heritage Museum while making possible a series of improvements to the Museum and its exhibits.

The Foundation recently purchased a vintage caboose in Ohio that trustees believe is an excellent fit for the project. Featuring a traditional cupola and a largely intact interior, the caboose is exceptionally well preserved — reducing the need for costly sandblasting and interior renovation.

The caboose will be installed freight station renovated by the Foundation on River Road, creating a natural setting for interpreting Beaver County’s rich rail history.

A new “History of Beaver County Rail” exhibit is planned in and near the caboose. Visitors will learn about the functions of a working caboose and its crew, along with the history of railroads and trolleys throughout Beaver County. Displays will feature route maps, dates, names of former lines and historic photographs. A replica model of Beaver County’s last passenger train is also planned to run on an overhead track.

The project will make possible other improvements inside the Museum. The existing loading dock will be alongside the building, a former P&LE Railroad enclosed to create an expanded Gift Shoppe, allowing the current Gift Shoppe space — the freight station’s former manager’s office — to become a dedicated Fort McIntosh Room.

The new Fort Room will allow more of the fort’s archaeological artifacts to be displayed and interpreted in a visually engaging setting. Plans also incorporate technology, including a “digital twin” of Fort McIntosh and a 3-D talking hologram of Gen. Lachlan McIntosh. The new room will complement planned improvements at the Fort McIntosh site, with the two envisioned as a destination for military-history audiences from throughout the country.

The Foundation has already received more than $100,000 in lead gifts toward its $300,000 fundraising goal for the caboose project, Gift Shoppe relocation, and Fort Room.

The winter season is quickly approaching! To be prepared, the Township has arranged for the purchase of the needed maintenance materials. A bid contract through the Beaver County Regional Council of Governments has been executed for the purchase of 600 tons of road salt.

A second contract through the PA Department of General Services has been entered into for the purchase of 1,750 tons of road salt. The amounts purchased can be extended to 140% of the contract estimates. Arrangements for the purchase of anti-skid materials are also in place. The Township provides winter maintenance on over 53 miles of local and contracted roadways.

The following reminders are provided so you may assist us this winter. Most importantly, please remove vehicles from the street during any snow event that requires plowing or the application of salt or anti-skid. There is reduced visibility for the drivers during snowstorms or at night. Maneuvering a plow truck through parked traffic makes the job of the plow truck driver much more difficult.

• Township Ordinance regarding snow removal does prohibit parking, or allowing to be parked, any motor vehicle or other vehicle on any public street within the Township following the deposit or accumulation of ice or snow of 3 inches or greater in depth, until the snow has been completely plowed from the full width of the roadway. Violators are subject to a $15 fine when ticketed by the Police Department, or towing when necessary.

• Do not shovel snow into the road or have your driveway plowed into the road. This creates a safety hazard. If possible, wait until the road has been plowed before cleaning out the end of your driveway. There is no practical way to plow the road without depositing snow into your driveway. Township snow removal crews do not clear private driveways or driveway entrances of accumulated snow.

• Cul-de-sacs are difficult to clear to everyone’s satisfaction. Snowplows do not have the ability to lift and carry snow from one area to another. The plow pushes the snow. The driver pushes the snow to an area most suitable to expedite the plowing and to open the road for the majority of residents. The Road Department will return to cul-de-sac areas for more thorough clearing after all roads have been properly plowed and treated.

The Brighton Township Sewage Authority (BTSA) has completed upgrades to the Todd Road Lift Station, one of the Township’s largest lift stations, with the improved station now up and running and serving the Township. The project replaced the station’s pumps, variable frequency drives and pump controls, providing more reliable and efficient operation and better equipping the station to handle current flows and meet future needs.

Serving the Township since the late 1970s, the Todd Road Lift Station experienced maintenance challenges and reduced reliability in recent years, demonstrating the need for modernization. Completed in July 2026, this project addresses those concerns and reduces the likelihood of emergency maintenance going forward.

Most of BTSA’s lift stations were built during the late 1970s and 1980s, and many components are now reaching the end of their expected service life. As a result, the Authority is facing increased maintenance requirements and is proactively budgeting for lift station upgrades in the coming years to maintain reliable wastewater service throughout the Township.

These planned improvements will help mitigate emergency repairs, improve system efficiency, and support the long-term integrity of BTSA’s collection and conveyance system.

This fall the Township will provide a fee-based curbside collection program for leaf waste to comply with and implement state regulations that mandate curbside recycling, including yard waste. The yard waste drop-off site will continue to operate on the same basis as it currently is and, therefore, participation in the curbside collection program is optional. Homeowners are encouraged to continue to use the drop-off site, or compost leaves in their own yards.

The collection of leaves and yard waste is a fee-based program whereby residents purchase biodegradable paper collection bags at a cost of $2 each within which the leaves, garden residues, shrubbery clippings or tree trimmings must be placed. Bags must be placed at the curb on collection days to be designated. Bags will be pre-sold at the Municipal Building. Bags used must be purchased from the Township, and not be from another source, such as a home improvement store.
