🚨 THE TIME HAS COME… WE’RE MOVING TO OUR NEW SHELTER!🚨

Big changes are happening at St. Clair County Animal Services! As we prepare for our next adventure, we want to share some important dates with our community.

📦 Our office will be CLOSED November 18th–20th as we pack up and make the move to our new home.

📍 Our new address, effective November 23rd:

Our time at 1250 S. 11th Street has officially come to an end. While we are beyond excited to move out of a flood-prone area and into our new facility, this move is definitely bittersweet.

This shelter has been home to so many memories, countless happy adoption days, reunions, second chances, and the beginning of new chapters for so many animals. It’s hard to say goodbye to a place that has been such a big part of our journey, but we know the best is yet to come!

We are so grateful to everyone who has been part of our story at 1250 S. 11th Street, and we cannot wait to welcome you to our new home on Comwest Parkway!

Here’s to new beginnings, new memories, and even more lives saved🐶🐱💙

Wishing a very Happy Boss’s Day to our Director, Ashley Jett!

Almost 20 years later, and she still chooses animal welfare. Through the challenges, the long days, and everything that comes with this line of work, her dedication to helping animals and serving our community continues to shine🐶🐱

Ashley is about as rad as they come, and we’re lucky to have someone who cares so deeply about the animals and the people behind the work leading our team🤘🐾

Thank you for all you do, Ashley, we love you!

You know what? It doesn’t have to be 100° and a Monday for our crew to handle a hoarding case😅

Today, we removed 27 dogs from a hoarding situation, and we still have approximately 20 more dogs to remove.

These dogs have had little to no meaningful human contact and are understandably terrified. Many are essentially starting from square one when it comes to trusting people, learning how to safely interact with humans, and adjusting to life outside of this environment.

Right now, we are seeking donations to help us transition all of these dogs and give them the care and support they desperately need. These dogs will be rescue transfers only, and we are looking for rescue organizations who can give them the time, patience, and specialized care they need.

If you would like to make a monetary donation toward their care, donations can be made here ⬇️

https://www.venmo.com/u/StClairCounty-AnimalWelfareAdv

If you’re able to donate supplies, contribute toward their medical care, or simply share this post, we would truly appreciate it❤️

Every donation and share helps us continue helping these dogs.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

This is something that needs to be talked about more in animal welfare.

People see the happy parts of shelter work. The adoptions. The reunions. The dogs getting their freedom rides. The cats finding their people. And those moments are everything.

But they don’t always see what happens in between.

Animal welfare workers see abuse, neglect, injuries, abandoned animals, animals who don’t make it, difficult decisions, and situations that don’t just disappear when the workday ends. Some things stay with you.

And then there’s the other side of it: the way shelter workers are sometimes treated by the very community they’re trying to help.

They get yelled at when the shelter is full. Blamed when they can’t take an animal. Called names when they have to follow policies. Criticized for things completely outside of their control.

People sometimes assume shelter workers don’t care because they can’t take every animal, save every animal, or give someone the answer they want.

The truth is, most people who choose this work care a lot. Sometimes, probably too much.

This job can take a serious toll. Compassion fatigue, burnout, stress and the emotional weight of constantly seeing animals in crisis are very real.

So this month, please remember the people behind animal welfare.

Check on your shelter friends. Be patient with them. Thank them. Give them a little grace. You never know what they dealt with before they walked into work that morning, or what they’re carrying home with them at night.

A little kindness can go a long way.

And if someone is struggling, don’t be afraid to ask how they’re really doing. You don’t have to wait until someone is at their breaking point to check in.

If you’re struggling yourself, please talk to someone. Call or text 988 if you need someone to just listen.

Animal welfare workers spend their days trying to save lives.

Let’s remember that their lives matter, too. 🐾

Below are pictures of the small, but mighty, incredible staff that works tirelessly and gives their all every single day.

🚨 PLEASE TAKE THE HEAT SERIOUSLY. THIS CAN BE LIFE OR DEATH 🚨

Just about an hour ago, we took in a dog who was actively suffering from heat stroke. This is not something that happens slowly. In extreme temperatures, a dog can become critically ill, very quickly.

This sweet girl is being called Roz for now, and thankfully, she is recovering well. But her situation is a heartbreaking reminder of just how dangerous these temperatures are.

🌡️ We are expecting temperatures around 100°F with dangerously high heat indexes over the next several days.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS INSIDE. Do not leave them outside in this heat, even if you think they are only going to be out for a little while. A doghouse, shaded area, or bowl of water does not protect a dog from extreme heat. And please, NEVER leave your pet in a parked vehicle.

Heat stroke can cause organ damage, collapse, seizures, and death. It can happen faster than you think.

🐾 Keep your pets in a cool, air-conditioned space.
🐾 Provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🐾 Avoid walks and exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
🐾 Watch closely for heavy panting, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or collapse; these can be signs of heat-related illness.

Roz is still eligible for reclaim by her owner for the next seven days. If you believe Roz is your dog, please contact our office with proof of ownership, or stop by our office with proof of ownership.

We are so thankful Roz is doing better. Now, please help us make sure no other dog has to suffer through this.

Bring them inside. Keep them cool. Keep them safe❤️

Another 100° day. Another hoarding case.

Today, we took in approximately 25 cats from a hoarding situation, and unfortunately, we have more still to come!

An intake this large, again, means we are going through our cat supplies FAST. We’re asking our community to help us stock up so we can provide these cats with the care and comfort they need!

😻We are currently in need of:

• Canned cat & kitten food
• Cat beds & blankets
• Toys & enrichment items
• Scratching posts & pads
• Cat carriers, hard plastic preferred

Many of these cats will also need veterinary care as we work through their medical needs. If you would like to make a monetary donation toward their care, donations can be made here⬇️

If you’re able to donate supplies, contribute toward their medical care, or simply share this post, we would truly appreciate it❤️

These cats didn’t choose the situation they came from. We’re going to do everything we can to give them a safe and comfortable place to land!

Wishing a very happy to all the amazing dogs out there!

Our staff spends their days loving, caring for, and advocating for shelter dogs and that love doesn’t stop when they clock out!

Today, we’re celebrating by showing off some of the dogs who get to call our staff members their own. From shelter pups to spoiled couch potatoes, these dogs are a big part of the reason our team has such a huge heart for animals🐾🖤

And while some of us have one or two, some of us might be considered “crazy” when it comes to the number of dogs we have… but hey, we’re not sure what that means🤣

Happy National Dog Day from our pack to yours!

🚨 BOLO — LIV IS MISSING 🚨

One of our dogs, Liv, escaped the play yard today during group. Our team spent the last hour of the day searching for her and was able to follow her trail down 11th Street and Highway 15.

Liv was last seen crossing the creek near our shelter and heading toward the subdivision behind our facility.

🐾 Liv
• Fawn & white
• One blue eye
• Nervous around people, but VERY social with other dogs
• Last seen with a slip lead still attached

We currently have a trap set for her and are continuing to search.

⚠️ If you see Liv, please DO NOT chase her or attempt to catch her. She is nervous around people and may run. Please keep eyes on her from a distance and contact us immediately via Facebook Messenger with her location.

Please share this post so we can get Liv safely back to the shelter. ❤️🐾
