It's that time of year again!! 🌳

Falling from Osage Trees at Boardman Park are HEAFTY fruits: please use caution when standing under, walking under, parking under- or anything else you might find yourself doing before getting clonked in the head with this falling fruit.

Along a gravel road near Boardman Park's Historical Village is at a significant piece of the Park's natural history: a row of Osage Orange Trees.

During the 1800s, before the invention of barbed wire, farmers planted the trees as living fences or hedges to contain livestock. They were planted closely together in a line and pruned to promote wide growth, resulting in a fencerow that was "horse high, bull strong and hog tight". Stems of the trees are extremely thorny, and the branches arch and interlace to form a "living barbed wire tree".

Historically, the land that is now the Park was once a 160-acre farm. The farmer's house, now called the Diehm House, was built around 1828 by Josiah Beardsley- when the Osage Orange fencerow was established.

The fruit of the Osage Orange Tree, "hedge apples," or "monkey balls," is a large, dense, green ball up to 6" in diameter. Many believe that the fruit of the Osage Orange will keep spiders and other bugs out of the house (or basement, sound familiar...?).

Next time you're in the Park, use caution when visiting this area- and maybe grab an orange to test a spider theory?

Family Photos at St James Registration is Now Open!

We are opening the doors of the historic Boardman landmark, St James Meeting House for professional family photos by local family photographer Kayle Paskel of KP Photography LLC.

Sessions are by appointment only and will be available on December 6 and December 12.

$75 per session
- 15-minute private photo session
- 5–10 professionally edited digital photos
- $35 non-refundable deposit required at booking
- Remaining $40 due day of appointment
