🎃 🍂 ❄ When fall meets winter...

This week marks the 15th Anniversary of the October 2011 Northeast Snowstorm. This event climatologically was off the charts. It was an historic storm, especially for so early in the season. Even looking back into records to the mid 1800s in locations that have data that far back, this storm blew those numbers away.

The impact of the heavy, wet snow led to numerous trees down due to them being in foliage and power outages. In some areas Trick or Treating and other Halloween events even after the storm departed were impacted from the snow and power outages.

The mild October weather has slowed the peak fall leaf color in the New York City area a bit behind what we saw last year. Shown are some pictures from about 25-50 miles north and west of NYC from New York and New Jersey from over this past weekend. Peak color is about 30-40 miles away to the north and west but should work in closer to the city as we move through this week.

What a difference a year can make, especially when you come off a wet July-September time period! Here's a closer look at how being in drought or abnormally dry conditions or not being in either can impact water levels on one reservoir about 25 miles from New York City.

With dry weather expected in much of the East the next 7 days, you might be wondering when it might decide to rain again. The latest 8-14 day outlook from NOAA NWS Climate Prediction Center does slightly favor wetter than normal chances from Western Pennsylvania on south and near normal conditions in the Northeast. Temperatures in the 8-14 day period are expected to favor above normal in the East, especially over the Southeast.

🌀 🌊 💨 The area of low pressure well off the Mid-Atlantic Coast has acquired enough subtropical characteristics that it is now considered a Subtropical Storm, named Subtropical Storm Josephine. The latest track from the National Hurricane Center as of 5 PM EDT on October 21st shows the storm is expected to move away from the East Coast. That said, even with the storm well offshore, strong winds, coastal flooding, and dangerous marine conditions along with beach erosion will all continue to be impacts especially from the Jersey Shore to the Outer Banks with impacts as well from Staten Island and Long Island into New England.

🌊 💨 A nor'easter offshore will continue to bring impacts along the coast as this week moves along. Tidal flooding, especially at the time of high tide, rough surf, beach erosion and gusty winds will all be impacts. Be alert for flooded roads near the coast around high tide! Watch where you park your vehicle as well in and near any coastal areas including rivers that feed into bays and harbors near the coast. Remember saltwater can cause damage to vehicles, sometimes weeks to months afterwards!
