Philadelphia Declaration of Independence 07/04/2024

Happy 4th of July to everyone!

On this day 248 years ago, the handwritten and signed copy of the Declaration of Independence was set into print, 200 copies had been created and were sent out on horseback to all the new states up and down the coast. As the month went on, more newspapers and local/state governments would typeset and publish their own versions, allowing for all new citizens to learn of their independence!

You can find our reproductions of these various versions of the Declaration on our website amongst many other documents that were crucial in winning the fight for independence and securing the creation of our country. Order one for yourself or a loved one to commemorate this important holiday!

As always, be safe and have fun celebrating today!

Printing the Declaration of Independance, July 17, 1776!
On the afternoon of July 4 John Adam’s was tasked by congress to oversee the printing of the Declaration as edited by Congress on the 3rd and 4th. He carried a fair copy to the print house of John Dunlap and printed about 200 copies. The following day John Hancock began sending copies to the various states mostly by horseback. It took 10 days for the Declaration copy to reach Boston on the 15th, it was set in type on the 16th by John Gill and printed today, July 17, 1776…. It was ready for distribution on the 18th and was read from the balcony of the Old State House on that same day for the first time in Boston!
