Many fall between the eligibility requirements for family assistance and services for older adults, while facing age and gender discrimination and serious health risks.

Professor Judith Gonyea spoke with GBH about rising homelessness among older women and a new Lowell housing development that will provide temporary housing and support for 50 women.

Gonyea said the development is “incredibly important,” noting that shelters alone can’t offer the stability people need, and that harsh living conditions can quickly damage health.

She also warned that removing gender from federal homelessness data makes older women harder to see and can limit access to care and shelter.

Global conferences don't usually happen in Lusaka.

They happen in Geneva, London, Washington, the same handful of cities that also write most of the policy.

Beyond Borders is choosing differently. This January, BUSSW is co-hosting a global conference on the Sustainable Development Goals in Lusaka, Zambia, alongside The Catholic University of East Africa, The Zambia Catholic University and The University of Zambia, three institutions doing this work daily on the continent the SDGs were written to serve most urgently.

Where a conversation happens will shape who gets to have it. Registration is priced in tiers by region, so the room can reflect the world it is discussing.

BUSSW faculty and PhD students are headed to San Antonio for the American Public Health Association’s 2026 Annual Meeting & Expo, November 1-4, to share social work and health research with about 11,000 public health professionals from around the world.

Assistant Professor Daniel Jacobson, with PhD students Jerry Kai-Chun Fu and Megan Nizza, examines the quality of care for gay and bisexual Latino and Black men who have survived sexual assault, including stigma, HIV prevention barriers, and gaps among healthcare providers.

Assistant Professor Ian Johnson explores how public libraries absorb the effects of housing instability, mental health needs, substance use, and the climate emergency, and how communities can redefine safety there.

Social work education is stronger when we learn from one another.

At the Council on Social Work Education’s 72nd Annual Program Meeting in Atlanta, BUSSW faculty, staff, and students shared research on topics from student services to maternal mental health, led practicum education workshops, and connected with colleagues across the field.

We also had a great time co-hosting the New England Schools reception with Simmons University, Smith College, and the University of Connecticut, where colleagues celebrated connection and unity on the dance floor and in conversation with new and old friends.
