There’s more to the story we all learned in school.

The Revolution didn’t just set Patriot against Loyalist; it was a brutal civil war that also divided America’s Indigenous nations.

Learn about this little-told history at our past grantee Museum of Early Trades & Crafts on November 12.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, North America was torn apart by the violence and chaos of the American Revolution. There’s more to the story we all learned in school. The Revolution didn’t just set Patriot against Loyalist; it was a brutal civil war that also divided America’s Indigenous nations. Join historian Henry Crouse on November 12, as he discusses the Lenape, New Jersey’s Indigenous inhabitants, and their role in the complicated cataclysmic conflict that birthed the United States.

You heard it from them! 📣

If you're part of an organization that either:
• 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 have a history-based mission OR
• 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 have a history-based mission but 𝗻𝗼 professional staff,

you'll love taking part in our Community History Program!

You'll learn from experts how to research and share the local history that interests you, get $1,000 for participation, and become eligible for $5,000 to kickstart your project (and you'll likely make some life-long friends as well!)

Sound fun? Apply by December 3: https://njhumanities.org/programs/community-history/

We're so glad we had the opportunity to participate in the New Jersey Council for the Humanities community history program! It was a wonderful learning experience that helped us strengthen our approach to researching and sharing Hammonton's history, while connecting with other organizations doing great work across New Jersey.

If your organization is considering applying, we highly recommend it! The deadline to apply is December 3, 2026.

Our friends in the Highland Park area are highly encouraged to take advantage of the free story sharing workshop Raíces Cultural Center will hold at Highland Park Public Library November 8. As part of its Family Ties Project, which got a kickstart in our Community History Program back in 2021, the workshop will help you share and preserve your family history in creative ways.

Nicole from Raíces also facilitates our Oral History and Story Gathering Community of Practice (cop.njhumanities.org)! 📽

It's part of the library's fantastic Between Two Worlds Series, which will culminate with book talks and an author visit from American Book Award Winner Maisy Card. Maisy is the author of 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘎𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 who in the past worked on an NJCH-funded project with Newark Public Libary.

We loved seeing a shout-out to our past grantee Pinelands Alliance as well as our own information about the Jersey Devil cited in this USA TODAY piece on America's cryptids! 👹

We thank the late, great Kean University historian Brian Regal, whose knowledge on this topic was unsurpassed, for sharing his research on the origins of the Jersey Devil with us and the world.

Have you ever had an encounter with the Jersey Devil?

From the Jersey Devil to Bigfoot, creatures have a hold on Americans' imaginations. Here's how they originated, and why they continue to fascinate us. See link below ⬇️

This National Arts & Humanities month, the current exhibits at our past grantee Hunterdon Art Museum are wonderful examples of the nexus of the arts & the humanities.

"A Legacy of Making: 29 Contemporary Artists Inspired by Their Italian Heritage" and "African, American: On the Art of Troy Jones" both use as a mechanism for exploring cultural identity, which pulls humanities practice into the picture (pun intended).

Both are open, along with HAM's 2026 member exhibition, into 2027.
