The Battleship New Jersey is the longest, fastest, most decorated battleship in history. From 1943 to 1991, she served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the Persian Gulf. The mission of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is to restore, preserve, and exhibit the continuing history of the USS New Jersey and those who worked and served on her so their service will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

September, 1982. A signalman aboard Battleship New Jersey uses a signal light to send a message to a nearby ship during sea trials, months before the battleship’s fourth recommissioning. Even in 1982, none of the Navy’s advanced communications systems were completely secure from electronic detection, but flashing lights and flags were, because they emit nothing an enemy could intercept. Today, a signal lamp is still in that same spot on the signal bridge, and guests can touch it on their way up the red line.

October, 1989. Battleship New Jersey is part of the American battle line during a fleet exercise, followed by USS Missouri and the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser USS Long Beach, with screening ships astern. The photo was taken from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise off the coast of Yokosuka, Japan.

Ships in a formation like this one worked together, each adding its own strengths and helping to protect the others. Even a battleship with nine 16-inch guns relied on the ships around it.

Nearby ships and aircraft were tracked on board in the Combat Engagement Center. Big ships can’t turn on a dime, so knowing what was nearby mattered for coordination and safety. The CEC is one of the most restored areas on the ship and a must-see when you visit.

October 27 is Navy Day. The first Navy Day was celebrated in 1922. The date was chosen to honor Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday, a tribute to one of the Navy’s strongest champions. Decades later, historians traced the Navy’s official birthday to October 13, 1775, but many still mark today as Navy Day.

More than 45,000 sailors served on Battleship New Jersey across four commissions. Today we honor them, and sailors, past and present.

October 1968. Crewmen from Battleship New Jersey wait on the deck of Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Perth to return to their ship after an exchange of crewmen between the two ships. Perth, a Royal Australian Navy destroyer, was serving with the US Seventh Fleet off Vietnam at the time. Note the kangaroo painted on the deck.

Were you ever part of a crew exchange between ships? We would love to hear your story in the comments.

September 1982. The 16-inch guns on the forward deck of Battleship New Jersey, photographed during sea trials. Each turret extends about 50 feet down into the ship and turns as a single unit, rotating at four degrees per second. The three guns in each turret can also raise and lower independently, at 12 degrees per second. You can find out more about these powerful guns when you visit the ship.

October 23–26, 1944. The Battle of Leyte Gulf, recognized as the largest naval battle of World War II, followed the American landings on Leyte that began the effort to retake the Philippines. It unfolded as four separate actions: the Sibuyan Sea, Surigao Strait, Samar and Cape Engaño. Surigao Strait saw the last battleship-versus-battleship action in history, and by the end of the battle Japan had lost three battleships and four aircraft carriers. Battleship New Jersey served as the flagship of Admiral William Halsey’s Third Fleet. This photo, taken from the deck of USS Hancock on October 12, 1944, shows New Jersey steaming with Task Force 38, 11 days before the battle began.

Electronics Technician Chief Michael W. Gorchinski served aboard Battleship New Jersey, which was off the coast of Lebanon in October 1983. On October 23, a su***de truck bomb destroyed the Marine Battalion Landing Team headquarters building at Beirut International Airport, killing 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers. Chief Gorchinski, 35, had volunteered to go ashore and provide technical assistance to the Marines. He was killed in the attack. He was born in Evansville, Indiana. We remember him and all who were lost.

1939. USS Enterprise (CV-6) underway with aircraft on her flight deck, less than a year after her commissioning.

The “Big E” was launched 90 years ago this month, on October 3, 1936. October also holds two of her major battles: Santa Cruz Islands, October 25–27, 1942, and Leyte Gulf, October 23–26, 1944. She earned 20 battle stars in WWII, the most of any American warship.

Today, her stern plate stands beside Battleship New Jersey. As seen in the second image, it is holding a bouquet sent in her honor this month. The display’s base was built with an opening that holds a vase, and the flowers will remain through October, for as long as they last.
