Gone but never forgotten

Today, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit pauses to remember the 241 American service members killed in the Beirut Barracks Bombing on Oct. 23, 1983.

At 6:22 a.m., a terrorist truck bomb struck the Marine headquarters building at Beirut International Airport, collapsing the barracks and taking the lives of 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and three Soldiers. Most were assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/8 and deployed with the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit as part of the multinational peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

In 1985, the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit was redesignated as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Today's 24th MEU carries forward the lineage and legacy of the Marines and Sailors who served in Beirut.

Forty-three years later, we honor the fallen, the survivors, the rescue personnel, our French allies struck that morning, and the Gold Star families who continue to bear this sacrifice.
We have not forgotten. We never will.

Semper Fidelis.
