ID NO. 01-44-015
Boil Water Notice in Effect
The water consumers of the Town of Canton in West Canton side of Town ( Food
Lion to Midway Medical and Advanced Auto to Patton Farms), in Canton, NC
that are experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution
system due to a large water main break. Periods of low or no pressure in the
distribution system increase the potential for back siphonage and introduction of
bacteria into the water system.
Therefore, the Division of Water Resources advises that when water is restored
consumers should boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking,
making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled
water.
Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that
may be present in the water.
This office is strongly urging the water consumers to conserve water whenever
possible. This advisory remains in effect until further written notification is issued.

A FLOOD WATCH has been issued for Haywood County

Haywood County Emergency Services is closely monitoring the weather. The Outdoor Flood Alert Siren system is ready if needed. If significant flooding occurs, here is what you need to know:

* Sirens will sound if flooding is observed by a first responder or if the National Weather Service issues its highest level of Flash Flood Warning.
* The sirens make a distinctive HI-LO sound, which will be followed by a spoken message instructing you to evacuate.
* If the flood siren is activated, the tones and messages will cycle on repeat for 5 minutes.
* Any siren activation will also include an emergency alert sent to your phone, which may include additional instructions.
* Don’t wait for the phone message, though. If you hear the siren, evacuate IMMEDIATELY.
* Do not hesitate. Take loved ones, including pets; take your phone, and if it’s handy, take your emergency kit and leave on foot.
* Do NOT get in a vehicle to evacuate.
* If the siren is activated, it is too late to safely leave by car.
*Climb to higher ground and stay there until flood water recedes or until help arrives.
* The sirens are a last-resort warning. Pay close attention to the weather. Evacuate early if you feel more comfortable doing so.
Visit ReadyHaywood.com to hear an example of the siren tone.

Town of Canton Weather Update and Community Preparedness
Just a quick update regarding the weather forecast. While we do not want to cause unnecessary alarm, weather conditions can change quickly, and we encourage everyone to have a plan in place and be prepared to act if conditions are warranted.
The Town has taken precautionary measures to secure items that could be blown around by high winds, or pose a concern in flood-prone areas, particularly locations that typically experience flooding first.
Please take a few moments to review your emergency plans and ensure you have necessary emergency supplies on hand in the event of power outages. These supplies should include flashlights, extra batteries, drinking water, nonperishable food, necessary medications, and fully charged cell phones or backup power banks.
If you have not already done so, please sign up for Haywood Alerts, monitor the weather, and use caution throughout the forecasted storm. Avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through standing or moving water.
The Town will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates through Haywood Alerts and our social media channels as needed.
Please stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe!
