Jackson - Union County Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God's love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Jackson - Union County Habitat for humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Families apply to our local Jackson, Union County Habitat for a home. Habitat does not give away free homes. A family that gets a home must be willing to invest 250-300 "sweat equity hours" to build their home and take a money management course. When the home is completed, the family commits to making regular mortgage payments (at zero percent interest) until the mortgage is paid off. All Are Welcome

Jackson - Union County Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Our Habitat crew has been happy to partner with Green Earth in the past... and future... helping to build bridges and bolster embankments. We look forward to spending the afternoon with them at the Southern Illinois Alternative Gift Fair on December 6th!

November 6 is Marooned Without a Compass Day. Luckily Green Earth, Inc makes getting outside in nature pretty easy to navigate. We're grateful for their land stewardship. You can support them at the AGF.

We will be working Saturday, November 7th at 1834 Pine Street starting at 8AM. I heard we had a few more volunteers than we had jobs last week but Dan has many activities planned for this Saturday. We will continue working on soffits. There’s a knee wall to be built, attic baffles to install, and blocking between the attic and the eaves.Folks can put up some backing boards for kitchen cabinets while others work in the crawl space to box out the floor joists for the toilet placement.

Dan met with our plumbing supervisor today and he and his UA Local 160 Plumbing and Pipefitters apprentices will start getting plumbing in next week.

Last week our electricians finished up their prep work. Volunteers got dirt filled in where it had sunk around the foundation and made more progress on the soffits. Susan met with Beckie and gave her a heads up on the multitudes of decisions she’s going to have to start making soon!

Here’s a few photos from last Saturday. So nice to see some younger faces joining the crew!

Yep, we’re working on Halloween! 🎃 We’re all planning to come dressed as Habitat volunteers! 🔨 We will start at 8AM on Oct. 31 at 1834 Pine Street in Murphysboro. We will continue working on soffits and fascia and whatever other mischief we can conjure up.

This past week so many little things got done!! HVAC crew was in and will finish their preliminary work on Wednesday. Likewise, Julio and his Murphysboro Electric team will be in to finish their prelim work before we turn on power to the house. Our crew has been pretty small lately as folks are off traveling or grand-parenting and such. But we still got a lot done. We got some work done on walls, got started on the attic storage platform and got the whole east side soffits and fascia done.

We will be working at 1834 Pine Street in Murphysboro on Saturday, October 24th. We will start at 8am and we’ll be working on soffits and doing some work inside.

Last Saturday we had two crews working on porches in the front and back. We got rails and balusters up in front and got as far as getting the decking down in the back. We also did some prep work inside that will make life easier when we get to drywall.

On Tuesday, the John A Logan Construction classes came over and installed our windows for us and then hung around for some lessons and practice using surveying equipment. Jim and Dan finished up some details on the back porch. Today, Wednesday, the JAL HVAC students are there getting duct work installed and Julio, from Murphysboro Electric was over doing prep work this morning as well.

We will continue working on porches and prepping for work on soffits at 1834 Pine Street in Murphysboro on Saturday, October. 17. We will start at 8AM.

This past Wednesday we got the front and back doors in place. I spent a little time in the crawl space prepping for the John A Logan HVAC students who came in the afternoon to do some prep work. They plan to return this coming Wednesday to start installing duct work. Hopefully the weather will not get in their way. It was great to see Susan and she got a lot of the debris swept out of the house. On Saturday Dan concentrated on getting the back porch started. The rest of our small workforce got the tub and shower enclosures in place and rebuilt the walls there. We also nailed down the spacing of the roof rafters. In the last photo, Tim was demonstrating that the door k**b we installed worked properly.

We will be working at 1834 Pine Street on Wednesday, October 7 and on Saturday, October 10. We will start at 8AM both days. We’ll be getting doors installed and work on the porches.

This past week we got decking on the front porch and then attended to some details inside on Saturday. We got things in order so we can move the tub and shower enclosures into place and Dan got the hole cut in the utility closet for the HVAC team from John A Logan. Sadly, our supervisors are being spread thin these days but we’re doing our best and thankfully, they are very patient.
