📣October is AAC Awareness Month! 📣
Communication comes in many different forms, and at River Hills, we celebrate EVERY voice!
What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Simply put, it refers to any system, tool, or method that helps someone communicate when spoken words aren’t enough or aren’t an option.
AAC tools range across a whole spectrum of technology:
⭐Low-Tech AAC: Communication boards, picture exchange cards (PECS), eye-gaze frames, or simple paper charts—no batteries required!
⭐Mid-Tech AAC: Simple electronic devices that play recorded messages when a button or switch is pressed (like single-button voice output devices or multi-cell message buttons).
⭐High-Tech AAC: Dedicated speech-generating devices or iPad apps that feature complex vocabulary software, text-to-speech, and personalized voices.
🏫AAC in Our School Community 🏫
We are so proud of the amazing AAC communicators at River Hills!
⭐River Hills currently has 61 students using dedicated AAC devices
⭐River Hills students access their devices through direct selection (pointing or touching with their finger), switch scanning and through eye gaze
⭐River Hills students use their AAC devices to participate in learning, have their wants and needs met, socialize with peers and adults, participate in vocational activities in the building and community and MUCH, MUCH more!
