With quiet weather today, why not look ahead to winter?

As you may have heard, we have an El Niño ongoing. But this is no ordinary El Niño, this one is on track to be the strongest one we have ever observed.

https://bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/oni/ used observational and model data to reconstruct the ENSO phase back to the end of Civil War. When doing that, 5 events stand out on the strong end of the El Niño scale and one thing that all but one of these winters shares is very mild winter temperatures. Also, 3 of the 4 winters with dependable snowfall measurements (those start in 1884-85), came in under our normal snowfall of 51.2".

Although a common theme you may be hearing about this upcoming winter is that it will be a giant nothing burger with warm temperatures and little snowfall, we do have to say not so fast on the little snowfall statement. When looking at the top 25 snowfalls in the Twin Cities weather records (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/climate/journal/top_twenty_snowfalls.html), 8 of those events come from winters that featured an El Niño (of any strength). So although we may not see as many 1-3" type clipper events, we are still susceptible to seeing "the big one".

Okay, you can go back to watching football! 🏈

7 PM Update: Gusty winds will ease this afternoon and become light tonight. Widespread frost is expected. Temperatures are likely to drop below freezing across southern MN and western WI, where a Freeze Warning is in effect. Increasing southwest winds late tonight may keep temperatures milder across western and portions of central MN, though many rural and low-lying areas are expected to drop to or below freezing.

For any green thumbs out there, it would be best to cover up those plants tonight. Temps will sink below freezing for much of us outside of the core TC metro. This weekend will remain dry but breezy with elevated fire weather conditions Saturday.
