Engineering economic mobility through better policy

Charlotte has 43 data centers, and most of us didn't know it. That changes Monday.

I support the 150-day moratorium. Completely.

And this week the state House passed SB 730: a statewide framework for land use standards, water requirements, and utility disclosures. The General Assembly is moving prospectively. So should we.

I also support telling you the truth about what we can and cannot legally do--and why that distinction actually protects you.

The law is clear. The vote is Monday. And as always, I'm ready to work with anyone at the table to get this right for Charlotte.

It's not too late to check out this weekend!

Most people have never heard of Opportunity Zones, but they shape which neighborhoods get private investment for the next 10 years. The map is being redrawn right now, and Charlotte's comment period closes June 7th. Here's what you need to know. ๐Ÿงตโฌ‡๏ธ

Called it in 2024. The NC Supreme Court just agreed. And Charlotte isn't the only city that needs to hear this. ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

We rescinded I-77. Now we owe Charlotte a credible path forward. Tomorrow we vote on funding it.
Charlotte has a world-class research university in its backyard. It's time we act like it.

Today, we remember.

I don't usually make it personal. But this one is.

Both my parents are US Army Retired. I grew up learning that the strongest teams--military or civilian-'are built on diverse perspectives, not despite them.

I'm a UF alum who turned down Duke for a minority achievement full-ride. PhD. Licensed PE. Elected official. UF 40 Under 40. The data on my life says access works.

Systemic barriers shaped my options. Merit shaped my outcomes. Both things are true.

DEI didn't lower the bar. It ensured the bar was applied to me--not the zip code I grew up in or the wealth my family didn't have.

When we remove barriers to talent, we get more talent. That's not ideology. That's engineering.

Here's what history actually shows: every American turnaround--the New Deal, the GI Bill, the Civil Rights Movement--happened when working people connected across difference instead of being divided by it. Acknowledging race's impact on opportunity is not the same as dividing by race. Confusing the two is either a mistake or a strategy.

We don't rise by pulling the ladder up. We rise by building a bigger one.

Calling that discriminatory isn't truth-seeking. It's cowardice.

The season opener for The Color Purple kicked off last night--I was blown away by the talent right here in our community. Fantastic job by the cast and crew!
