Grandpa took young Jim out for his 11th birthday. The young man caught his first stripers, first blue catfish and first largemouth bass. Great fall day.

Probably my favorite time of year - by myself on the water. No pleasure boaters, no jet skis, no fishing gamblers practicing their exhausted game day looks… basically no people. Beautiful.

11 years on a row with Kurt. Yesterday we fished DC to Aquia and caught a lot of fish. A terrific fall day.

Fall on the tidal potomac.

Joe and Mike caught some fine tidal potomac stripers yesterday. I’ve caught quite a few stripers in the mattawoman area this year and the majority are paper thin. The water temps are in the low 60’s and I don’t see a lot of bait migrating into the creeks.

Switched mostly to stripers and it should only get better. There are still some frog fish but it’s mostly done.

I love this post. I remember when that bait first came out. We would have this bait tied on to our speed stick, stren mono, a ambassador 5500c, a pitch fork attached to the skeg of our evenrude 6hp and up the lander portion of the Potomac would go in our leaky 12 ft Jon boat that had two bricks for anchors and a gallon milk jug cut in half as our “bilge pump”. Now -everybody “knows” the same things that they have read off the internet. People pass Internet “knowledge” on as if it’s concrete from experience when it’s actually just parroting. Just like faith is proved through action - the love of fishing is proved through time on the water. That photo brings back a lot of memories.

Sometimes I just go fishing. I fish for only myself. There’s a big difference between guide fishing and my fishing. I used to give a seminar in Harrisburg called “don’t fish like a guide”. As a guide u are adjusting to peoples fishing abilities. You are keeping the boat in certain positions that aren’t the most efficient. The boat is not covering water. As a guide - I need to be “on ‘em” when I set the boat down. As a fisherman, I can find them. A lot of people say “I can be a guide” or “my son wonders why I go out with you when I have a boat” - there are answers to those statements but I keep them to myself.

Bruce and Harlan have fished with me for the past 12 years. Every guide post on the internet always talks about their “great guy/gal” clients so I won’t bore you but they really are great guys. This next week I have some of my favorite people coming for trips - Pete, Sunny, Eric and Kurt. Kurt is also a person that has not missed a year since the start of my guiding career.
