This past Wednesday, Special Service Captain Joshua May was awarded Delawares Heroic Fireman of Year award at the DVFA Chiefs Dinner. The award is a result of Captain Mays quick and selfless actions on an in-district MVC, resulting in a life saved.

On May 15th, Engine 13-5 and Rescue 13 responded to the Stockdale section for an MVC with a rollover, into a building, and on fire. As Engine 13-5 arrived on scene, they observed a victim trapped under the burning vehicle. Without donning his face mask, Captain May (E13-5 Officer) freed the occupant and dragged the patient to a safe area while the nozzleman applied water on the fire. Captain May showed exceptional heroism and demonstrated the pride, honor, and tradition held by the Claymont Fire Company. On behalf of the leadership and Membership of the Claymont Fire Company, congratulation!

At the beginning of the month, 4 members traveled to Bucks County PA to attend a Anderson Rescue Solutions LLC Roof Rope Rescue Operations class. The class covered multiple uses of the Anderson roof ops kit, victim rescue techniques, and anchor points. All tactics that could be of vital use in the first due.

Our primary response jurisdiction, including automatic aid, contains a variety of mid-rise and high-rise occupancies, some of which have limited fire protection systems and complicated layouts. The potential for our responders to utilize an ‘outside of the box’ technique for victim rescue is present, especially in occupancies that pre-date the 1980s and contain small, tight stairwells and courtyard setbacks.
