High Sierra Ranger District, Barnes Mtn prescribed fire update: Today approximately 125 additional acres were burned via hand ignitions on unburned pockets along the 10S05 and 10S02 Roads along the perimeter of the project area, and in the interior areas with the USFS UAS (uncrewed aircraft system) with low fire behavior. The vegetation and fuel reduction objectives were met, and all ignitions on the northern unit were completed, amounting to approximately 1,060 acres of underburning finished this week in these Barnes Mtn units. Ignitions on the remainder of the southern unit are postponed until conditions are favorable. This underburn area will be monitored and patrolled while smoldering materials burn down and go out. Tomorrow the District fire and fuel staff shift to pile burning in the higher elevation zone.

High Sierra Ranger District, Barnes Mtn prescribed fire update: As planned today, ignitions were paused and prior day’s burned areas still had dead fuels and vegetation that continued to smolder and burn. Tomorrow’s plan is to continue ignitions due to the predicted improved conditions and complete the North unit, then pause understory burning until conditions improve again, and shift to pile burning in the higher elevation zone.

High Sierra Ranger District, Barnes Mtn prescribed fire update: Today approximately 170 additional acres were burned with low fire behavior. In cooperation with the Air District (SJVAPCD) ignitions on this understory burn are planned to be paused tomorrow while the smoldering vegetation burns down and smoke ideally dissipates from the area. We hope to continue ignitions Friday through Sunday if favorable air quality/smoke dispersion and weather conditions return.

Update for High Sierra Ranger District: Yesterday and today the hand crews and engine modules completed ignitions on approximately 500 acres of the Barnes Mountain prescribed burn units. So far, the project has been successful at reducing dead vegetation and bear clover under mature trees and young reforestation plantation areas. The Forest continues interagency cooperation with CAL FIRE Fresno Kings Unit for synchronized burning of an adjoining private ranch and shared some UAS (uncrewed aircraft system) photos, and Air Attack 430 training flight photos from yesterday. Tomorrow’s plan is for continued ignitions in both Barnes Mtn. burn units.
