Some important and devastating news out of Marshfield. Due to a failed override (passed at Town Meeting but failed at the ballot box), they are looking at permanently eliminating 70 educator’s positions.

The Cohasset Schools could find themselves in a comparable position if we don’t consider an override now. The School Leadership is working on a comprehensive 5 year plan to be released to the public this month. We are hopeful this will result in an override on the ballot at fall Special Town Meeting as the School Committee indicated was their goal last spring.

Residents should continue to attend Select Board and School Committee meetings and write them to express your support and concerns. Let’s Invest in Cohasset together.

Marshfield voters on Tuesday, Sept. 1 voted against a $7 million property tax override. See link below ⬇️

Common sense regulatory policy like the proposed “Surveillance Technology Oversight” bylaw would ensure surveillance technology works as intended to enhance public safety ✨AND ✨preserve our civil liberties and privacy rights.

In this post, we provide:

1️⃣ an overview of the proposed guardrails

2️⃣ what this bylaw does NOT do

3️⃣ highlight key tradeoffs, and

4️⃣ humbly ask for your support.

The petition and signatures are due THIS TUESDAY, AUGUST 18.

💻 We just launched www.investincohasset.org/surveillance with way more specifics than is considered cool to share on social media, and more still to come.

Questions, feedback? We are still tweaking the bylaw and would love to hear from you!

Two things can be true: surveillance technology can be a legitimate public safety tool ✨ AND ✨ they pose serious risk to civil liberties, privacy, and public safety.

We’re just asking that transparent mechanisms be established so citizens and leaders can weigh the tradeoffs, democratically approve use, and routinely monitor costs and benefits. Ya know, like we do most other town business. 🤷‍♀️

✋🖊️ Can we count on your support to at least get this petition to the floor at Town Meeting?

The Cohasset Public Safety Committee is meeting AT NIGHT this week! Thursday August 13th at 6:30PM.
Residents are invited to participate in person at 135 King Street or via zoom.

On the agenda is a review/vote on options for the 135 King Street design. At the last meeting there was debate over reducing the scope of the building v. putting forward the same design as last Spring Town Meeting/Election. Of note any design would still need review/vote by the Select Board and to pass the March 2027 Special Town Meeting and subsequent vote.

There are 2 significant items on the agenda worth reviewing:

1. Director of Finance and Operations – while a new Director was named earlier this year, it appears the position may now be vacant.

2. Public Comment Period - a significant change to public participation. Public comment will only occur during a designated period at the beginning of the meeting. There will be no opportunity to comment after policy discussions later in the meeting, even if new information or amendments emerge.

If you care about transparency, accessibility, and meaningful public engagement, this agenda item deserves your attention. Read the language for yourself, attend the meeting if you can, and let the School Committee know whether you believe these procedures strengthen—or weaken—public participation.

Invest in Cohasset will continue to advocate for open government, thoughtful deliberation, and policies that encourage—not discourage—community engagement.
