Huge congratulations to NAMI South Carolina State Board member John Wellens on the release of his new book, Crossing Muddy Waters: Paddle. Endure. Heal.! 🛶📖

Featured this week in the Lexington Chronicle, John’s 255-page memoir chronicles his incredible 2025 expedition paddling the Mississippi River—a raw, honest look at physical endurance, mental resilience, and finding healing on the water.

Beyond serving on our board and advocating for mental health across South Carolina, John’s personal journey reminds us of the strength it takes to navigate life’s roughest currents.

Holy City Bridge Angels has been making waves in SC and we are looking for volunteers💙🪽

What started as a mission to bring compassionate action to our community has grown over 100 volunteers strong in just six weeks. These dedicated volunteers walk Charleston’s bridges to offer a listening ear, support, and hope to anyone facing their darkest moments—giving them a chance at that next minute, next hour, and next chapter in life.

Staff Spotlight: Deniece Chi, Bilingual Program Director đź’™

For 22 years, Deniece has been a cornerstone of the NAMI family. Her journey began on a rainy night after visiting her daughter in the hospital, carrying years of blame and searching for answers about bipolar disorder. When she called the helpline, four words changed her life forever: "It’s not your fault."

After taking NAMI’s Family-to-Family course, she found hope, community, and her calling. Today, Deniece leads NAMI South Carolina’s bilingual initiatives—breaking cultural stigmas, training Spanish-speaking leaders, and ensuring underserved families receive culturally nuanced support and resources.

Deniece’s top tip for protecting your mental well-being?

"Mental health isn't built on dramatic overhauls—it’s built on consistent, small boundaries."

✨ A 10-Minute Tech Buffer: Start and end your day screen-free to let your mind reset.

✨ The Physical Foundation: Consistent sleep, a daily 20-minute walk, and hydration do wonders for nervous system regulation.

✨ Neutral Self-Talk: Swap harsh self-criticism for objective grace: "This is tough, but I can handle it."

✨ The Power of "No": Protect your bandwidth. "Let me check my schedule and get back to you" is a complete sentence.

Most importantly: if you feel overwhelmed, reaching out for help is the strongest boundary you can set. You never have to walk this journey alone.

Drop some love for Deniece and her 22 years of service in the comments! 👇

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month đź’š

From September 15–October 15, we honor the cultures, contributions, and communities of Hispanic and Latino Americans while continuing an important conversation around mental health.

At NAMI South Carolina, we’re proud of our strong bilingual programming and resources that help make mental health education and support more accessible to individuals and families across our state.

This month, we celebrate culture, community, and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to mental health support.đź’š
