Chilly mornings, warm afternoons, and sunshine every day — highs in the mid to upper 70s, lows in the low 40s. No rain expected, and drought conditions continue, so things are extra dry. 🌾
🌫 Light winds + crisp mornings = perfect fall weather, with a little fog possible early Sunday & Monday.
🔥 Fire Safety Reminder: With ongoing dry conditions, avoid outdoor burning, watch for sparks from grills or equipment, and keep an eye on anything that could ignite easily.
Enjoy the sunshine, Maury County — safely! 🌤️

From Oct. 15 through May 15, a FREE burn permit from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) is required to burn yard debris or conduct prescribed fires.

🧑‍💻 Online permits are issued 7 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time at BurnSafeTN.org.
📞 Permits may also be obtained over the phone by calling 877-350-BURN (2876), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.
🔥 Permits are valid until midnight on the day they are obtained, so plan to obtain a permit the day you plan to burn.

Why permits matter:
🔥 Tennessee experiences approximately 1,000 wildfires each year during fire season, which is from mid-October to mid-May. This is when fire risk is highest in the state.
‼️ Most fires are caused by human activity, including burning under unsafe conditions.
📣 Burn permits are our way of communicating with you about when and where it is safe enough to burn during fire season.

How do we decide when to temporarily pause issuing permits?
📈 Every day during fire season, TDF's expert fire professionals analyze many fire weather data points, using a tool customized to Tennessee's wildfire fuels.
➡️ Based on that data analysis and on conditions on the ground, a decision is made every morning at the local level about whether it is safe enough to burn that day.
🔥 If fire danger is too high that day, we will temporarily pause issuing permits. Once conditions improve, we will resume issuing permits.

October 17 is National Pasta Day 🍝… so here’s a tasty way to remember your storm alerts!
A storm watch is like having all your spaghetti-and-meatball ingredients laid out—pasta, sauce, seasoning. Everything’s ready, but nothing’s cooking yet 👀
A storm warning is when the pot is boiling, the sauce is bubbling, and dinner is officially happening 🍲⚠️ That means the storm is on the way (or already here), so it’s time to take action!

🌪️ Stronger Together Through Preparation!

Today, more than 25 agencies and departments came together for a simulated tornado and severe weather exercise designed to test emergency coordination, communication, information sharing, and decision-making during a major weather event. The exercise provided an opportunity to evaluate response plans, strengthen interagency collaboration, and identify areas for improvement before a real emergency occurs.

While we pray these events never happen, we know the time to prepare is before disaster strikes.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to every agency, department, and individual who gave their time, talent, and commitment to making today a success. When we work together, our communities are stronger and better prepared. 🇺🇸👏

🍂 Columbia & Maury County Reminder:
Fall isn’t just pumpkins and cooler nights — in Tennessee, it’s also our secondary severe weather season. October and November often bring a return of strong storms and even tornado potential due to shifting jet stream patterns and leftover Gulf moisture. Stay weather-aware as conditions can become spring‑like again.
🌪️ Now’s the time to review your safety plan:
• Identify your shelter area: Basement, storm-safe room, or a small interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
• Know your community options: The Maury County Office of Emergency Management- Safe Space is located at 1451 Tom J. Hitch Pkwy, Columbia, TN, 38401
• Check your alerts: Make sure your NOAA weather radio, smartphone apps such as TN Valley Weather, and emergency notifications are working — fall storms can develop quickly.
Sign up for Emergency Alerts for Maury County here: https://www.smart911.com/smart911/ref/reg.action?pa=maury911
• Review your family plan: Everyone should know where to go and what to bring during a warning (flashlight, meds, chargers, water).
⚠️ Fall storms can catch people off guard. A few minutes of preparation now makes a huge difference when warnings start popping up.
Stay safe, Columbia — let’s be ready this season! 🌩️💛

Although it’s been so very hot, it’s time to start thinking about cooler weather! 🍂
Before those chilly days arrive, take a minute to give your home a quick safety check:
• Make sure your heating system is ready for the season
• Test your carbon monoxide detectors
• Keep space heaters on a flat surface and at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn
• Plug heaters directly into the wall, not an extension cord
• Turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed
A little preparation now will keep everyone safe and cozy later! 🔧🔥
Stay cool for now—and warm later! 💛

Weather update
Hurricane Isaias is now a Category 3 Hurricane and will make landfall in the Pensacola, FL area this evening. The storm will then continue North traveling through Alabama towards Nashville. It is anticipated that the storm will be downgraded to a Tropical Depression as it loses its energy over land well before it makes the Tennessee state line. The timeline remains the same as yesterday and we expect to start feeling the impacts from the storm system in Maury County late tonight or early tomorrow morning in the form of wind and rain.

Rain is expected to begin late tonight or in the early morning hours on Saturday before sunrise. The National Weather Service anticipates between 3 and 4 inches of rainfall through Monday that may be intense at times. As a result, a Flood Watch has been issued beginning at 1am Saturday morning until 7am Sunday evening.

A wind advisory has been issued by NWS for our area from 1am Saturday to 1am Sunday. Winds are expected to be between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Localized short-term power outages may occur due to tree limbs falling on power lines. While it is possible for a tornado to occur as a result of this system, it is considered unlikely that one might form at this time.

Maury County is continuing to monitor this weather event and will issue updates as the situation evolves.

EVERYONE SHOULD REMAIN WEATHER AWARE AND HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATIONS.
