The City of Colwich, founded in 1886 and incorporated in June, 1887 as a third class city is located in South Central Kansas approximately five (5) miles northwest of Kansas’ largest city, Wichita. A rural-suburban community, Colwich is a place where residents can enjoy the comforts of a small town, but yet take advantage of all the amenities of metropolitan life. The Kansas Oklahoma Railroad intersects Colwich with K-96 approximately two miles north, Highway 400 approximately six miles south, with US 135 and the Kansas Turnpike to the east making Colwich comfortably accessible to all major transit systems surrounding the region. Mid-Continent Airport, located south of Colwich, provides residents with air transportation offering services from several main stream industry airlines. Colwich is an oasis in South Central Kansas, combining the best of rural life with the convenience of being near all the amenities that come with big city life. Our city has parks and walking trails, a disc golf course, plenty of activities for youth and adults, community events, and most of all a safe environment for you family to live in-all while being minutes from New Market Square shopping center and Via Christi Hospital.

Did you know the corner of Wichita and Colorado has been home to several businesses throughout Colwich's history?

One of the earliest was Stern's Drug Store, located on the northeast corner of Wichita and Colorado. Then in the 1890s, A. G. Mueller operated a furniture, picture framing, and undertaking business in the building. It was later used to sell farm implements.

Around 1914, Alex Schmidt operated a restaurant there, and by 1916, it had become Hay's Restaurant.

During the 1920s–1940s, John McClure operated a restaurant at the location for many years.

In 1951, Tony Mannebach purchased the building and opened Tony's Recreation, which he operated until his retirement in 1971.

The smaller building next door had its own history! Originally built in the early 1900s as a coal and grain office, it later housed another coal business. For a time in the 1950s, Colwich City Council even held meetings there! The city and township eventually purchased the small building, and it was torn down in early 1972.

Colwich, ⤵️That’s an actual picture taken by the Colwich Public works crew the last time they cleaned out a lift station! 😝

Wet wipes (even the “flushable” kind), paper towels, facial tissues and feminine hygiene products don’t break down like toilet paper. Instead, they can clog sewer lines, damage lift station pumps, and lead to some pretty expensive repairs! And remember, those repairs come at a cost to our community. That's money that could be better spent on other improvements around Colwich!

🧻 Paper (toilet paper ONLY!)

A little reminder can go a long way in protecting our sewer system, avoiding unnecessary expenses, and keeping Colwich running smoothly!
